Good news: Mr B and I are BOTH working for the first time since July last year (admittedly, I was coasting along on a mix of redundancy pay and freelance income until he lost his job in October, but then it was back to me being a sole breadwinner. Did I come home to a nice clean house and a hot dinner? NOT ONCE! He is a rubbish housewife. Good thing he's a lovely bloke.)

Bad news: Sydney is freaking ridiculous this summer. The best thing I can say for it is that we haven't had any 46°C days yet, but we have had weeks of scorching days and sweltering nights and the whole city just wants a good night's sleep.

Other news: I wrote a pinch hit for hd_erised. The mods gave me the wonderful oldenuf2nb as my pinchee and I was so pleased, as it all came together with some things that were pooling around in my head. There are politics, there are jokes, and there are Ron and Hermione, because I love them. I hasten to add that at no point is Harry actually dead, despite rumours to the contrary.

I want to talk about the writing process for this, but I wanted to do that last year, too, and haven't had time, so who knows? It was written, at any rate, and it wasn't the latest fic sumbitted!

Title: And, On The Other Side, A Welcoming Voice
Author: blamebrampton
Recipient: oldenuf2nb
Pairing(s): H/D, then canon pairings
Rating: PG
Word Count: 38,500
Warnings: Discussion of canon and post-canon deaths
Summary: For twenty years, the official history has told readers that Harry Potter died at the Battle of Hogwarts. The next edition is going to require some significant revisions.
Author's Notes: [livejournal.com profile] oldenuf2nb, you have been one of the most consistently wise and generous voices of fandom over the years and I have benefitted so much from knowing you, as well as loving your art and fic. I confess this story shook hands with your prompts and then went gallivanting off in its own direction, but, since it stayed in touch with the themes you said were important to you, I hope you will enjoy it regardless.

Thank you to the mods for your encouragement and hard work. You make our world a better place!

Many, many thanks to the team of brilliant betas whose eagle eyes and good sense have all added greatly to the final version. [livejournal.com profile] bk7brokemybrain, [livejournal.com profile] divertazsc [livejournal.com profile] illereyn and [livejournal.com profile] mamapyjama, I owe you all! You lifted my spirits and made me look far more competent at both writing and typing at a time of year when you would have been perfectly entitled to be selfish! I value your friendship as much as your fine brains!

And for those who don't know the phrase, 'bottled it' means roughly the same as 'chickened out'.

I marked this to read later, but somehow ended up reading the entire thing in a couple of hours instead. Utterly delightful from start to finish. ♥♥♥

Don't be sorry, I chose to keep reading. Well, not so much chose as I thought I'll read the first paragraph or two, but then I couldn't stop until I finished. Time well spent! ^__^

Yay for jobs and lovely blokes (even if there were no dinners)!
BOO to awful heat. We are currently at the end of a nor'easter with high winds and lashing wintry rains. I love that stuff.
And yay for your fic. Thank you for bringing me in. I really enjoyed the process.

Rain is such joy. We had a bit here the other day but it has been drier than usual and even the air tastes gritty some days.

I really enjoyed working with you! Clever, insightful and gentle, my favourites!

I'm going to be so relieved once I only have to pay half the rent and bills! I was going to have to rent Rusketus out to homes needing a visit from a Satanic Cat. (Surely that's a market waiting to be tapped?)

Thank you so much--your story was exactly the same length as the amount of time between finishing cooking and needing to be out the door tonight, though I spent the last 30 minutes glancing up at the clock worried that I wouldn't get to the end before I really, really had to put it down...

I really enjoyed this so much--so many brilliant quotes and lovely images. So much horrid politics that echo what even I can't quite ignore about today's world.

Hurrah! Sorry about the politics, but I have hope we will get through. Possibly with a lot of protesting and Nazi supression …

I'll take it! (You'll regret it after a few weeks of no sleep due to the weather never cooling down. Though having said that, it is at least reasonable tonight!)

Ah, but that's what open windows and electric fans are for -- whereas I can't sleep in a heated room without fresh air, and there's only so much you can do with warm jammies and blankets!

Oh, and loved, loved, LOVED the story, too! *is terribly behind on reading erised fics*

Alas, over 30 degrees and soupy humidity at night defeats everything but air conditioning, which at least means the air is moving. Though I do hear you on the lack of fresh air on really cold nights: I've been known to sleep in socks, beanies and gloves as well as sometimes more than one hiking fleece in England in a bid to keep a little draught going. Every time I've woken up either STILL freezing, or dreaming I was being roasted like a potato!

And HURRAH! Thank you!

You're very welcome!

*grins* I once visited friends in Canada; somewhere in the prairies in late March. It still was around -15°C, and their farmhouse had central heating from a furnace via floor air vents. Absolutely stifling by European standards, so I asked them whether I could maybe open the window a bit at night, especially as they'd also given me quite a few heavy blankets.

They thought I'd gone mad. :P

I loved the story! Your worlds are always so real, and your concepts so original. I also got excited about the wizard from Horsham - it's always funny seeing the place you live in a different context!
