Title
Fathers, Who Could Do With a Spot of Sinning,
Part 3e of 3e (The age of miracles is not past!) (Though this is in two parts because LJ hates me)
Author [livejournal.com profile] blamebrampton
Characters Harry/Draco, Ron and Hermione, Narcissa, the next-gen crew and sundries.
Rating PG
Words  64890 total, 10,983 this part
Summary After their sons fall in large amounts of teenaged love at school, Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter decide it's finally time to talk like adults about their own ties to each other. If only they could. Meanwhile, events of national importance conspire to distract them.
Notes Absolutely nothing to do with Jo Rowling, Bloomsbury, Scholastic or any other media titans. But affectionately nicked from all of the above.
My undying gratitude to [livejournal.com profile] jadzialove  who manages to do a wonderful job of beta-ing while I do an appalling job of meeting any deadlines, and then go and introduce errors afterwards. All the ghastly things should be blamed on me entirely, as my mentis has not been compos for years.
Thanks to everyone who has encouraged me along the way, but in particular to [livejournal.com profile] libby_drew  who kicked this all off, [livejournal.com profile] norton_gale , who is also responsible, and [livejournal.com profile] raitala  and everyone else who nagged cheerfully. Special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] treacle_tartlet  for additional beta-ing and general arse-booting, to [livejournal.com profile] leaf_light  for making me laugh at the same time as making me feel v guilty for my tardiness, and to [livejournal.com profile] goddessriss  for being consistently lovely – Happy late birthday! As always, all errors are mine and concrit and typo mentions are quite welcome.

One of my RL friends recently friended me on this journal (Hey M!) To her, and other people who think of me as just a political and knitting junkie slightly obsessed with her hair and footwear, I say, move along! Nothing to see!

To those who are here for the fic, I say, nearly! So close! I was going to wait until I had actually finished the whole thing up before posting, but it is possible that [livejournal.com profile] leaf_light  would crawl through the computer and strangle me if I did that. So penultimate chapter it is! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, you two!

It is my third LJ Anniversary! And I was going to post all sorts of insightful things about fandom and LJ and the Potterverse, but I am so disgustingly behind with comments in conversation posts as thing stand that I thought I would just go with fic instead.

So more Fathers, and there is actual physical contact of an amorous sort in this chapter! No, not smut, it's me. Er, there are also lorries and explosives ...

Just a reminder to new readers that this was begun so long ago that Asteria/Astoria did not exist in those days and so the role of Scorpius's mother is played by a nice French witch named Helene.

[livejournal.com profile] raitala  is leaving fandom today. Or at least, over the next day or so, as she is travelling where connections are up and down and so are the chances to post to LJ, given how much else there is to do.

Her art has been a massive part of my fandom enjoyment over the last nearly three years, and I wanted to give her a little something. I asked her what she wanted, and she replied 'The same thing I have been asking for for two and a half years! Finish Fathers!' After spluttering that it had not been that long (it had) and that surely she would prefer something tiny and amusing (she wouldn't), I knuckled down to work.

It's still not quite finished, but it may well be before the end of the week at this rate. There was a brief period where I never thought I would say that, given that I was not allowed to pursue my alternate ending in which Harry and Draco finally pause to snog, only to be wiped out by an errant lorry. [livejournal.com profile] raitala  knows where I live, after all, and the fear of waking up with watercolour brushes up my nose was enough to convince me to stick to the original plan!

A little background for more recent friends: Fathers is my story with the stupidest title in the world, and it is so old, Astoria/Asteria still had no name in those days, so here she is Helene and French. It was written when [livejournal.com profile] anthimaeria  asked me to continue a story called Sins of the Fathers, written in reponse to then sansa1970's lovely 20 Random Facts About Scorpius Malfoy. [livejournal.com profile] libby_drew , as sansa became, had a birthday yesterday, so dear, this is a bit of a present for you, too, And of course for Amber and everyone else who has been kind enough to wait patiently while I finish this beast. I notice that in the very first chapter of sins, I joked about my procrastinatory tactics and that I would have knitted a slip cover for the sofa, had I not written that. This month I have knitted three baby hats and two mittens in a bid to delay writing. Some things never change ...

Do drop over to rai's lj later today, as she will be partying there. As to why June 5, 2010, it's Draco Malfoy's canon birthday. Happy 30th, Draco. I never expected to find your pointy face as interesting as I did, but even very bad men deserve to have their capacities for growth and redemption investigated and encouraged. And you don't look a day over 25!

In the few minutes between the last post and this one, my dear friend [personal profile] bryoneybrynn  has mocked me in public AGAIN for failing to finish this story. I put it to her that if she hadn't convinced me to do the AS/S fest this would have been over by May ;-P Anyway, she mocked me in an update for Certain Dark Things, so I'm actually prepared to wear that ...

People I like much more, including mic and [personal profile] anabellhenry have been asking kindly what I'm up to, too. Being stressed and mental is probably the honest response. And sleeping on the sofa to wake up covered in kitties.

So, in a special sneak preview and with the caveat that I could actually decide to change anything in the following, a special sneak preview of the last part of Fathers Who Could Do with a Spot of Sinning (and a less ridiculous title). This time I really am writing the rest of this before I do ANYTHING else fic-wise.

A thousand thank yous to [personal profile] pingrid  who held off getting ready for dinner to cast a weather eye over this.  Ooh! and a big thank you to [profile] eynhashofet for Comment of the Day the other day! I can mock Twilight and be rewarded! Life is good!

Thanks to [personal profile] jadzialove for her beta-ing skills! And to [personal profile] anthimaeria and [profile] calanthe_fics for encouragement and niceness above the call of modern humanity.

And, after a few comments from part one,  the Thames Barrier is, as the name suggests, a barrier that protects the Thames from flooding caused by storm surges. It is one of the most beautiful pieces of modern engineering I know and it is also extremely cunning. There is talk of having it replaced by 2020, but since it will be a public work, I think I'm safe leaving it unfinished in 2023. The current Barrier looks like this:

I had a theory that this story would take me a weekend. As it turns out, that ranks up there with my theories that the fall of the Berlin Wall symbolised a fresh new start for the West where we would propel a global shift to universal peace and that personal jetpacks would be feasible and freely available by now.

So, several weeks late, a 'DVD extra' for Sins of the Fathers. Because [personal profile] anthimaeria would never forgive me if I didn't give her some H/D resolution. Though I have to tell you that the temptation to end it at the completion of the first scene below just to hear her yell was fairly massive.

I'm still not wholly sold on the writing in present tense thing, but it seemed to make sense to keep it up for stories in the SotF series. I am sure it will become less strange with practice. I really should have sat through more than half a meeting when I went to check out the writers' group at the local council all those years ago, because then I'd have sorted all this experimental stuff out in my 20s. Alas, I sat next to a good-looking poet at that meeting, and my natural strumpetiness won out. Funnily enough I can't play chess for a similar reason. I am convinced that this is why religious young women are so accomplished, because they do not run off for nights of drinking, long walks and debauchery.

The title started off as a joke, and then I just couldn't think of it as anything else. I hang my head in shame. And this is part one of two because I've gone over the word limit and feel mean enough to make you all wait for the last bit. Yup, pure evil. Off to eat a few baby hedgehogs.

Completely dedicated to the people who welcomed me to fandom through their help, comments and suggestions of things I should read. Thank you. My free time is now completely booked up until 2014, but I am surprisingly at ease with that.

All the good beta-ing is thanks to [personal profile] jadzialove, who is marvellous. All the stupid errors and recalcitrant lack of commas can be put at my feet.
