[livejournal.com profile] raitala  is leaving fandom today. Or at least, over the next day or so, as she is travelling where connections are up and down and so are the chances to post to LJ, given how much else there is to do.

Her art has been a massive part of my fandom enjoyment over the last nearly three years, and I wanted to give her a little something. I asked her what she wanted, and she replied 'The same thing I have been asking for for two and a half years! Finish Fathers!' After spluttering that it had not been that long (it had) and that surely she would prefer something tiny and amusing (she wouldn't), I knuckled down to work.

It's still not quite finished, but it may well be before the end of the week at this rate. There was a brief period where I never thought I would say that, given that I was not allowed to pursue my alternate ending in which Harry and Draco finally pause to snog, only to be wiped out by an errant lorry. [livejournal.com profile] raitala  knows where I live, after all, and the fear of waking up with watercolour brushes up my nose was enough to convince me to stick to the original plan!

A little background for more recent friends: Fathers is my story with the stupidest title in the world, and it is so old, Astoria/Asteria still had no name in those days, so here she is Helene and French. It was written when [livejournal.com profile] anthimaeria  asked me to continue a story called Sins of the Fathers, written in reponse to then sansa1970's lovely 20 Random Facts About Scorpius Malfoy. [livejournal.com profile] libby_drew , as sansa became, had a birthday yesterday, so dear, this is a bit of a present for you, too, And of course for Amber and everyone else who has been kind enough to wait patiently while I finish this beast. I notice that in the very first chapter of sins, I joked about my procrastinatory tactics and that I would have knitted a slip cover for the sofa, had I not written that. This month I have knitted three baby hats and two mittens in a bid to delay writing. Some things never change ...

Do drop over to rai's lj later today, as she will be partying there. As to why June 5, 2010, it's Draco Malfoy's canon birthday. Happy 30th, Draco. I never expected to find your pointy face as interesting as I did, but even very bad men deserve to have their capacities for growth and redemption investigated and encouraged. And you don't look a day over 25!

Title Fathers, Who Could Do With a Spot of Sinning, Part 3a/3c or possibly d, e if things get out of control
Author [livejournal.com profile] blamebrampton
Characters Harry/Draco (eventually), Ron, Hermione, Narcissa, the next-gen crew and sundries.
Rating PG
Words 7887 (this part)
Summary After their sons fall in large amounts of teenaged love at school, Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter decide it's finally time to talk like adults about their own ties to each other. If only they could. Meanwhile, events of national importance conspire to distract them.
Notes Absolutely nothing to do with Jo Rowling, Bloomsbury, Scholastic or any other media titans. But affectionately nicked from all of the above.
The first scene was popped up on my lj in slightly rawer form a while back, but is here for inclusion in the main story body.
My undying gratitude to [livejournal.com profile] jadzialove  who manages to do a wonderful job of beta-ing while I do an appalling job of meeting any deadlines, and then go and introduce error afterwards. All the ghastly things should be blamed on me entirely, as my mentis has not been compos for years.
And lasting love to [livejournal.com profile] raitala , who taught me the deep importance of cheekbones and armpit hair. Hush, she knows why that's an affectionate and not ridiculous thing to say!

I have been insanely busy this month, again, which is not really an excuse, but does explain why I failed to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to [livejournal.com profile] ldydark1  on the fourth. So, Happy Late Birthday! And I hope this year is wonderful for you!

Today is another one of those auspicious days on which several terrific people were born. And yes, I know that is true of every day, but these are people I actually know, so shush!

Firstly, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to [livejournal.com profile] blindmouse . I cannot begin to approach the genius that is [livejournal.com profile] frankkincense 's tribute to your birth, so I will just add my good wishes and hopes that we can all three finally meet up when I am next down your way.

And a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to [livejournal.com profile] raitala . Long before I had the insane good fortune to make actual friends with you, I had this idea that you were some sort of Kate-Bush-like Finnish artist living in a garret and yes I know Kate Bush is not Finnish, bear with me. Because that neatly explained how you could be so economically emotional in one moment, then quirkily hilarious in the next, all the while telling narratives that I would kill for with a far better use of ink than I can manage.

But actually, you're even better.

I hope you have a wonderful birthday, and year. I was bemoaning the fact that I have not even begun to make your present, when I remembered that I started on something for you for Christmas. It's short and unbeta-ed, and I have gone a step beyond no one having sex to no one even snogging, but it was begun on your sofa, with your cat helping, and it is H/D, or at least, will be in a few days after the close of the story, when they get their acts together.

Have a great day, dear!

To open with an aside: I bought a gel eye mask today, for those days when the heat is just too much. On the back of the packaging it has this immortal line:
BEAUTY TIP Avoid stress as much as possible.

There you have it, ladies and gentlemen. That's where we have all been going wrong!

Now to the point of this entry, which is to rave some more about this entry at hd_holidays, raitala's series Thaw.

About eight weeks ago, I was sitting in an attic hotel room in Florence, gleeful at being there with [livejournal.com profile] raitala  and [livejournal.com profile] pingrid , when Rai pulled out her most recent works.

She passed them over, and I just wanted to run downstairs and put them in my bag and say ‘Sorry? Paintings? No, you were going to show some but then you were distracted.’ when she asked for them back. Alas, I am ethical and slow, and was not smart enough to get her drunk first.

What she showed me were the first two images of these four. I sat and looked at them for as long as I could before it started to look a bit weird and stalkery. What I said at the time was something along the lines of ‘Oh god, Rai, these are brilliant! Look at their coats, and their expressions, and the underarm hair, and Draco’s little smile, and the sweat! These are just bloody brilliant!’

What I thought was ‘In this first one, Ron is so crankypants, and Harry is so curious, and Draco is counting to 10,000 in his head and planning to come first in every single exam if it kills him. And in the second one, there’s the moment when Draco’s smile moves from “I can’t believe I beat him!” to “Did his cock just twitch? It DID!” and Harry is thinking “Bugger” and “Bugger!” and last week he stayed back after their martial arts lessons and told Draco that the reason he could never beat him in that throw wasn’t because he was smaller and lighter, but because he drops his shoulder, which of course leads to an ironic edge to the first bugger. His word choice may not be ironic, BTW.’

She seemed pleased that Pin and I liked them so much, and did her standard modest hand wave thingy when we began to rave enthusiastically. She told me that they were for her recipient for hd_holidays, and I immediately developed an unreasonable hatred for said person, since they would ‘have’ these images, which wasn’t fair, because they were talking to me!

There was a reason for that.

Raitala is the TRICKIEST and KINDEST and NAUGHTIEST and CLEVEREST woman, and I really cannot say thank you enough! Though I am never, ever playing poker with her, because she managed to completely convince me they were for someone vague and annoying (oh, hang on ... no, it was acting! I am sure!) and I had not an iota of suspicion!

Though it is ENTIRELY my fault they were posted so late due to the fact that my own work was submitted appallingly late. However, what a brilliant addition to the final week!

My partner, who refers to fandom as ‘that odd thing you do, no, the other one’, describes Rai’s work as ‘kind of Aubrey Beardsley, it’s someone who is using human forms to make artistic points about the figure or the environment they’re placed in, rather than just representing a body’. Quite so. (He can be quite clever, that J.)

If you somehow managed to miss them, trot over to her lj and view the series here, and leave her some thanks for sharing her artistic and storytelling skills with us.

You know, with [livejournal.com profile] raitala , [livejournal.com profile] leochi , [livejournal.com profile] red_rahl , [livejournal.com profile] oldenuf2nb , [livejournal.com profile] lillithium , and the many other brilliant artists out there all providing their diverse, insightful art for free, as a fandom we are ludicrously lucky!

Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY [profile] tnumfive ! All the best for your day!
