Lovely people!

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] nolagal and [personal profile] meri_oddities ! You are two of the nicest people on my flist and your friendship has brought me many smiles in the time we have known each other!

And, because I am hopeless at these things, Happy late birthday to [livejournal.com profile] gossymer , who rocks an outrageous amount. You make things better around you. The same can be said for [livejournal.com profile] knic26 , you remain so thoroughly cool that I am in awe. And to [livejournal.com profile] tsosh , sharer of one of the great birthdays of the year, owner of one of the great kittens of the world, and all round damn nice woman.
[livejournal.com profile] tsosh

And happy birthday for yesterday to [livejournal.com profile] loghorea ,  you don't really say much, but you always word it so beautifully!

Alas, I am still suffering a lack of talent, but the fics I have under construction are increasingly well edited! There was a message on my phone that sounded as though it could have been my talent, I could hear loud music playing in the background, and a slurred message that, as far as I could work out, said 'Listen, relax! I'll be back!  Bring in some good Scotch and I'll make it snappy! Femme's talent has found her undies and Emerald's has stopped playing darts with Winstonmom's will to homework, it's all winding up here!'

It sounded as though it was going to say something else, but someone shouted 'Free chocolate' and the call ended suddenly.

Oh HI!

Sound asleep at a reasonable hour last night, woken by a crashing sound avec Irish folk songs. There, at the door, almost upright, was my writing talent.

'Oh HI!' it said.

'You smell like a distillery and you sound like a LOLcat,' I said. 'Get inside.'

'I bought you something!' it slurred. Five minutes of pocket-turning-out, it looked up again. 'But I ate it. Or lost it. Or maybe femme's talent has it. I think hers has my socks.'

'You're wearing tights.'

'Yeah, they're not mine.'

'Get inside!'

I put the coffee on, told it to sleep on the sofa, and went back to bed. This morning, I woke up to a small bunch of roses (picked from my front garden) and some new Fathers. Here, have a snippet for proof! (Alas, this is the third fic to finish on my list. Nothing on the other two. Stupid bloody talent!)

...

Draco watches as Lester looks from him, to Harry leaning rumpled against the doorjamb, then back to him, and swiftly sums up the situation inaccurately.

“Potter was still with Weasley at the hospital when I went to pick up the children,” Draco says, in what he suspects is a doomed bid for clarification. “We have a surfeit of bedrooms, it seemed only polite to offer him one.”

“Of course, sir,” says Lester with a very passable stab at wide-eyed innocence.

Draco comforts himself with the knowledge that Lester won’t share his conclusions with anyone. He’ll just mentally file them in the Useful Things To Know About My Superiors part of his brain, a part Draco suspects takes up several lobes.

Harry ambles in and pours himself a cup of tea from the still-warm pot. “Any news?”

“Backing for the whole op seems to have come from France. Lester tells me that Kingsley’s waiting for you to come in.”

Harry makes a face while he sips his tea. “It was too much to hope for that it would all be wrapped up neatly by the time I got up, I suppose.”

“Yes,” says Draco. “It was. Not to mention that it’s eight and you were going to be up at seven.”

“But you’ve breakfast for me, yes?”

Lester’s eyes are like saucers, Draco realises and, as he replays that conversation in his head, he is forced to admit Lester’s suspicions could seem reasonable to the untutored mind. Probably not helped by the fact that Harry is still wearing his pyjamas. With the DM monogram.

And in other matters ...

Just caught up with the week's news (this has been the week of no time) -- are you Filipinos out there all all right? The flooding sounds horrible! Though I am glad to see that the rescue efforts seem to have pulled off some dramatic successes! Stay safe!

On a happier note, HAPPY BIRTHDAY [personal profile] ciel_vert ! May Flights of Franks sing you through the day!

And does anyone know if/where I can find a paper/book/website that posits a well-constructed model for worst-case scenario climate change from several centuries to 1000 years in the future? I know that the sort of thing I am looking for will come with a very long list of caveats, and that's fine, it's research for fiction! But I am looking for something that would be able to tell me what could happen if, say, the sea rose by 100m. Would the Gulf Stream definitely be stuffed? Would that level of water coverage keep the landmasses warm? Would England be balmy or bitter? What would grow where?

Alas! Why is the Star Trek future of my childhood not here yet? I'd be able to run models on the holodeck! (And I know that I am about to have more people comment on my poor grasp of Federation history than sneer at the concept of anthropogenic climate change, which cheers me immensely!)
