Big hugs back, it's not at all an easy thing no matter how right it is to do. I have a strong feeling I will be at the cats' home rescuing another one soon, because, as you say, it is the vacancy that hits hardest.
I'd despair of the concept of a world in which fandom is crucial, but after the last eight years, I think it might be an improvement!
