Not rude at all! It is very very harsh. Despite the fact that there's a happy ending here, more journalists have been kidnapped and killed in the real world in the past 10 years than for many decades before that, so it's an issue that I think strongly on, too. I completely understand you not being able to read on.
I actually have a friend who was kidnapped by his father, and it did nothing good for his mind, either, though from what I have read there is a big difference between children who are taken and adults who are held hostage. Still, James would be right to be worried!
When I was writing, I did console myself with the thought that these were Finnish terrorists, so in all likelihood they would do what they could to keep their hostage alive.
