That is true but to, for example, go tramping around Harry/Draco pointing out where people's dialogue really needs work, and the characterisation is immature smacks of sheer entitlement (even where it is true).
Where's the line between offering criticism and just being a bit of a bitch? At what point does someone's opinion on your work (general you) actually matter? Why should anyone give a crap what I think is wrong with their story?
I'm actually struggling with this issue at the moment. There is a writer in fandom whose work I really enjoy, but english is not their first language and it shows in quite a few out of place homonyms and so on. I don't have a relationship with this person outside of having left positive comments for the things I do enjoy, but I really want to offer proofing checks to them. Why should this person respond to me with anything other than "fuck off then"?
I guess it just seems rude to me to assume that my opinion holds any validity to the person I'm offering it to, unless I already have a relationship with them.
