After cooling down and watching more slashy debate ...
Right, I am standing by my last post. She has a HUGE crush on him. I am watching the whole thing now, and it becomes abundantly clear ...
Sarah keeps saying John, but her eyes flicker to Joe ... it's very distracting.
I actually think she campaigned for the Democrats on at least three occasions. There was the huge opening statement when she talked about how appalling the state of the economy is now and how people are afraid. Yes, well, I think people are also afraid that the party may count for more than the two individuals in the top jobs when push comes to shove, and it was Republicans who got the economy here.
"and unless you're pleased with the way the federal government has been running anything lately ..." Sarah, it's YOUR party in power! Also, how do you fund a $5000 tax credit without it impacting on revenue? That makes no sense! The Australian experience with credits for private health care saw health care costs (and profits) climb, with no decrease in waiting lists and a sizable drop in public health spending since the money was going to private companies.
Ooh! She just looked over at him and then hurriedly dropped her eyes and smiled a secret little smile!
A third Biden campaign note, she seemed to agree that gay civil rights were human rights and something that Americans should expect under their constitution. At least, I think she did, She then declared that she would not expand a policy that she's supported in Alaska being extended to the US, Again, I think. The multiple negatives defeated me in the end.
When Palin wasn't supporting Biden's policies, the debate seemed to descend into a degree of confusion. How do you define 'win' in Iraq? I no longer know what the Republican party means by this. Even Bush seemed to accede that winning means Iraqi self-determination, but now McCain-Palin is pushing for something else, which is undefined. One rarely 'wins' wars. WWII was an anomaly, in most cases it's down to the Viking model of one side declaring that they are not prepared to sustain any more losses. The big problem with Iraq is that the 'other side' is an amorphous entity lacking a single leadership. If you stay there until there is no crime left, or no sectarian violence left, you will be there forever, because these are facets of humanity (and if you doubt that the latter is, I direct you to the attack on that Dayton mosque this week).
And hang on, Palin's just defined a 'win' in Iraq as being what Obama-Biden is seeking to implement, but declared that it will be best determined by American military commanders on the ground rather than by Iraqi politicians and security forces. Forgive my cynicism, but isn't one of the primary sources of funding for military commanders being in a state of war? Why would they end it? War is a policy of the state and not of the military for exactly this reason.
Oh Sarah, why are you making no sense? You're a Republican, you are MEANT to make clear and logical statements even if they have a differing ideological basis to some of the things I believe. You are meant to be the party of simplicity and commonsense, not complexity and suspension of disbelief.
However, on a slashy note, Joe has started to look at Sarah with fondness, and a certain gentle edge. See, Amy, you do not need to watch, I will cover all the subtextual passion for you thanks to the magic of YouTube. OMG! And now Biden, while rightly pointing out that McCain was dead wrong on Shi'ite/Sunni relations (and John REALLY said that? HOW, John, HOW could you have believed that? You're SMART, that's STUPID) has led with a 'John McCain – I love him ...' And I have to say, it's becoming more and more obvious that this is heading for a triangle.
It was exciting to hear Joe say that they need to find schools, not madrassas, in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Things are going downhill rapidly there, in the one place on earth where the Bush Doctrine would actually have made a difference in 2000 or early 2001 (and not just to avoid 9/11, the Taliban were and are Nazis for women, and I do not overstate my case).
And, oh, Sarah, how do you have diplomatic efforts with a country whose leader you have just called insane and unstable? Nixon went to China, you know ... I am leaving you 'respect for women' rights', as you do have that by your definition. And, fair enough, Israel might be a peace seeking nation again this year, which it hasn't been since the loss of Rabin (oh Rabin ... that was not fair!)
And, hang on, enough is enough of looking back and playing the blame game, but there have been huge blunders in the war? SARAH, you're a REPUBLICAN, your party MADE those blunders. You sound like a Lehman banker asking for a few billion dollars because you'll get it right this time. Oops, different debate ...
And at this point there's another Sarah glance and smile. Awwww. Joe isn't replying with his polished avuncular grin, though, I guess the Middle East is too serious for flirting in his mind. Fair enough.
Surge in Afghanistan? Um ... I'm going to choose to interpret this as Palin meaning to say that there needs to be a similar level of intense and coordinated effort in that arena, which is the case. But not that you need to send in a single wave of US ground troops, because that would be insane. But your troops have air-raided villages and have killed civilians -- not intentionally! -- but dead nonethless. You as Americans never train your troops well enough, and you never coordinate your efforts with other allies well enough, Sarah. Every single allied military person I have ever known has mentioned this. Your navy fired on my Australian friend's ship in Vietnam, both of my grandfathers were in flight wings that refused to fly ahead of your formations when on joint missions, because they only wanted to worry about German fire. If more money went into coordinating your military efforts and training your troops as well as they deserve, rather than into the machinery around your military, your young people, who deserve every piece of support you can give them, would have more chance of surviving. And you would be winning those hearts and minds you rightly identify as being essential.
And yes, Sarah, schools are good. And yes, Joe, stable governments that are not run by genocidal maniacs are better. And look -- he doesn't correct her when she says McClellan rather than McKiernan. It's definitely reciprocated. Oh, hold on, that little twitch may be the first sign that the love fest is coming to an end ... Except now Sarah looks as though she really wants him to approve of her. Oh Joe, you Heathcliff with the holding out!
And YAY! Good work with the pulling Alaskan money out of Sudan, Sarah! Nice one. Go home and force that legislation through.

As the the McClellan vs McKiernan, there was good reason he didn't correct her. If he had it would have come across as condescending. All of the pundits caught it and he knew they would. He didn't need to correct her, let others do that dirt.

I dislike how her current strategy seems to be to cover up her utter lack of relevant experience by being 'likeable'. If I hear the term Hockey Mom one more time.
One thing that I noticed about the debate is that she answers questions without actually answering them.

I don't know what her game is, but I have a good guess as to his: image control. She's much younger, female, less experienced, and has a friendly and likeable manner. If he appears in any way condescending, patronizing, or critical of her he will be the big mean man picking on the pretty little girl.
On the other hand, it could be twue wove.
I could totally buy Sarah Palin as a TV news anchor, perhaps for one of the National hour-long morning news shows. Small town mayor I can even see, but Governor? VP candidate? It boggles the mind, truly.
