Et tu, doctor? Et tu?

I slightly damaged my Achilles tendon coming home from the gym the other night. Having gone through the multi-year peroneal tendon saga, I didn't want to wrong-foot (boom boom!) myself on this one, so I headed off to the doc when two days of rest and ice had not done the trick.

Doc: What did you do?

Me: I was crossing the road, when I realised that the car in the distance was doing 70 rather than 50, so I went to sprint the rest of the distance and I felt a little pop and there was a sudden pinching hurt, and it's not a snap, because I could still walk on it, but it hurts with shoes or boots, is fine barefoot or with mules …

Doc: That's not like you.

Me: Que?

Doc: Avoiding the car.

I'm used to this sort of abuse from my friends and family, but from my doctor? Harsh. And honestly, if I wasn't so good at getting out of the way, my dire record of being run over/into would be far worse! Tendon will be fine, BTW, just minimal running for a week or two.

To be fair, he *does* sort of have a point...

I'm glad your foot will be OK, and even gladder you weren't hit!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
IT'S BEEN AGES SINCE THE LAST TIME!

Honestly, you're going to be 126 and at my funeral and will you be saying 'Oh her novels …'? oh no. Will you be saying 'Her literacy foundation changed lives!' oh no. Will you be saying 'And what about that time she brokered lasting peace in the Middle East …'? Of course not! It will be all, 'Heh, remember her squashy blue broke face?'

Though I tell you, this going to the gym lark has made my leaping out of the way of lunatics far more impressive. Might be up to going back to ballet next year so I can do it more artistically ;-) (And I think I may now have the full set of bung tendons in that foot ;-))

[identity profile] i-autumnheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
If I ever get to read those novels I know are lurking in your head (and hopefully on your hard drive?) then I promise faithfully to remember those before the squashedness.

I'm glad the gym work is paying off for you. I never got to see you dance before the original incident, so if you're really up to ballet again, go for it! I know I'm not - though I am managing riding, which is more than I though I'd ever get back to, so it's not all horrible.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
On the hard drive, getting longer ;-)

And I expect I'll be able be crap, but who cares? It's the doing that's fun, like riding!

[identity profile] i-autumnheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely. Plus exercise that's much, much less deadly dull than going to the gym.

Any kind of dancing is a grand thing.

Okay, this is hysterical! lol How many times have you been hit by a vehicle???

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Not THAT many! Only about four times when I've not been in a car myself. Er, I've sort of lost count of the times when I have been in a car. None of them were my fault, I don't drive! (I think cars are attracted to me, the way dogs are. Except dogs just want an ear scratch and chin rub.)

[identity profile] la-mariane.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm relieved to hear that you avoided the car AND that your foot will heal.

[identity profile] urnesha.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
ONLY four times?? lol lol Sorry, I don't mean to laugh! But I've never heard of anyone having this record of vehicular accidents! I'm glad you're okay! And your doctor sounds like a hoot. :D

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I am good at avoiding cars! But yes, pleased the foot is just a week or two annoyance rather than a palaver as previous tendons have been :-)

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Admittely, three of them were while I was cycling in Sydney, which is apparently the equivalent of walking up to a bull and saying 'Your breath is stinky! Look at my red frock!' ;-)

He is not quite as funny as he thinks he is ;-)

Everyone thinks they're a comedian! Tsk!

"It's been ages since I was last hit by a car!"
You should have seen it coming then! Oh wait, you did ...

I'm sure you realise this will only help promote your novels. You're coming perfectly pre-packaged with marketing material. I can even see action figures!

Brutal!

Glad you avoided the car! Hope the tendon heals well.

[identity profile] queerbychoice.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never heard of anyone else being hit so many times either. I think a consultation with the Guinness Book people may be in order.

[identity profile] chantefable.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, how ungentlemanly! Apparently, he is convinced you have supernatural teleportation abilities. Or that you're invincible. Bow before Brammers, the Almighty Overlady Impervious to Cars!

Take good care of your tendon!

[identity profile] shu-shu-sleeps.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my gosh - the giggle the doctor's comment elicited hurt my poor tummy.... at least you have a doctor who has a good understanding of your medical history :) S/he also has a wicked sense of humour.....

[identity profile] shu-shu-sleeps.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes - go back to ballet, that may inspire me to do the same (actually hometime is facilitating that plan...), and I have bung tendons in ankles (lateral and medial), knees and hips! I can still do stuff, you just have to watch out for the way you start compensating....

[identity profile] theodoraleft.livejournal.com 2012-05-04 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dear, poor you. Mind you, I always say no good comes of going to the Gym! I'll have to make another offering to Sulis Minerva for you.

Oh, I thought of you straight away, young lady ;-)

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2012-05-04 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a friend who has been hit far more often than me, but she did have a stint as a cycle courier in Sydney, which is Death City for cycling!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2012-05-04 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to confess, there's a scene in one of my fics where I have Sirius Black come off his bike, and someone commented that they thought that was an incredibly realistic scene -- which was probably because I gave him an almost exact recreation of one of my spills ...

But you're right! I should write a satire of a cyclist who goes around blowing up inconsiderate motorists!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2012-05-04 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
She's encouraging me, too! I think another 6-12 months will see a suitable balance of strength and flexibility so that I can tackle it without doing anything horrid. If all else fails, there's always tap :-)
