State of the Nation

Tasmania: Fires mostly under control, no longer super stinky hot.

Western Australia and Northern Territory: Still stinky hot for the most part.

Victoria: On fire, less stinky.

South Australia: Mostly fine.

Queensland: Under water.

New South Wales: Really quite wet, but for the most part it's falling from the sky rather than sheeting across the ground, so nowhere near as dire as Queensland.

And this video will probably be shown in snippets on TV news near you around the world, but watch this mostly original version for the beauty of the dialogue as a car looms out from a sea of foam blown onto a stretch of roadway and narrowly avoids two police. I strongly suspect the bleeped out bit may have come from the larger copper.

ETA: Charlotte mentioned the Sydney weather radar in her comment. This is the 128km radar shot from this evening. My house is about a half-inch down from the middle and a little to the left.

I cracked up laughing when I first saw the video - bloody lucky the driver had the headlights on.

For the past several hours I've been mesmerised by the Sydney radar on bom.gov.au - for goodness sake woman stay inside lest you drown standing up.

Actually, I can't remember when it last rained down here, hence the fires. Last week in the city you could smell the eucalypt smoke from 65,000 hectares of burnt or burning Gippsland. Most unsettling.

Stay safe (and dry),
Charlotte

I've spent all day telling the storm to go south: it's NEEDED in Victoria! While relentless, there have been lighter falls during the day, so I was able to go out on a grocery run and the guy who owns the local saki bar was able to take his dog out – happiest looking dog I have seen!

I hope the fires stop soon, and that it stays cool for you!
