Yeah, I'm with you. It's just boggling. My South African friend tells me that premeditated murder is a charge given for anything that isn't immediate self-defence. She's not a lawyer so I don't know if that's entirely accurate, but it sounds probable to me because South African law is generally well-weighted towards the victims.

And yeah … there's just no good ending because she's dead, and the very best result for him is that it was all a horrible mistake, and even that's not good. I'm going to stick with feeling terribly sorry for everyone involved.
