Writing for fests makes Brammers crazy.[Poll #1314580]

I have been giggling merrily to myself as a series of British voters cheerfully skew the results.

One of the women I beta for regularly has what can only be described as a mission to insert correct English flavour, to the point that she has emailed tourism authorities asking for details. That's the spirit!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
It was me, thanks for remembering it!

And your opinion is very close to my own. I loved Seven Days in June because of its travelogue elements, as well as because it was a good story. The Britishness of HP is one of the great charms of the books, and I think that writers who step too far away from that are asking for trouble. Of course, writers who vie for an authentic feeling by having Draco declare that 'I am off to the Tesco to purchase a curry' are in a different pile of trouble, too ...

No, but she didn't give us ticky boxes so we had to prioritise. :o)

Details, like everything in fic, are great when done well. It depends a bit on walking the line between scene-setting and info-dump. And also accuracy. I recently started reading (I almost always at least skim to the end, but this one got back-buttoned) an epically long fic which had all the HP names, eg Little Whinging, but was very clearly set in the American Mid-West. It even included the local Deputy Sheriff. (!!!)

Whereas you piled quite a lot of detail into Snatched, and it was glorious. So, when it comes to you, I vote for details. I caught a reference to Seven Days in June in the comments, and completely agree - in that context, including lots of details fit the story.

Question 2 definitely needed ticky boxes. I went for "Understand in context" but would have also ticked "Turn to Google" and "Pull out notebook". Holiday tips! :o)

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Deputy Sheriff?? Oh good grief.

And you flatterer, you. Bless you, keep it up. ;-) I agree that ticky boxes would have been a better approach. This was my first poll, I have learned!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an excellent point! I don't mind it when they are in the Muggle world for some reason that's integral to the plot; the cafe scene in Deathly Hallows worked really well for me for that reason. But yes, when it's just a recitation of research, it can be rather tedious.

Oh dear, looking for the porn ... er, I have jokes! Many jokes!

YAY YOU for submitting!

I look forward to the Florence story! I'm still trying to come up with something for the lads to do there aside from gawp at art and try on fashion. A no-stress fest could be just the thing!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Dammit, there go 3000 words on the limestone hills of the north ... ;-)

[identity profile] vaysh11.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I was quite relieved when I had it done, tbh, *and* that at least my beta thought it made some kind of sense. I suck at writing hate!sex, and really, I don't even think it has to do with me wanting it all love & fluff (which I don't), but lacking grasp of vocabulary. *sigh*

That Florence story is AS/S ;-). The H/D I will still write. Try on fashion is pretty good already (but how about having sex in broken, too small elevators?) :-). I liked Pushs Drabble-Fest. Should we do something like that? Perhaps decided on the 14/15 or 21/22 of January as the day when we all post H/D (or whatever) Florence fic?

Hee, that's what I hope I manage at times. Because who wouldn't want to know there is a place named Mt buggery?

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
VILE VILE ENABLER! (That was hilarious, BTW ...)

[identity profile] i-autumnheart.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Many of us love your writing (and rather like you yourself a lot as well, of course) but I'm pretty sure you're allowed to not do the fests if they get too annoying...

Re. question 1, I will never say something can't work in a fic, because I know quite well that you can make any concept turn cartwheels if you so choose.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It's my own fault for thinking that the end of this year would be smooth sailing and full of creativity, when I knew it would actually be exhausted and full of mindless rushing about (to whit, still have not caught up with you!)

And while you are very kind, you must have missed the recent musical, because that was mad, even for me ;-)

[identity profile] i-autumnheart.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
OK -the musical was a bit mad, yes :). You may have missed a calling as a writer-of-filk there: I was meaning to reply and suggest that, but was too disturbed by the number of show tunes I actually recognised: it says something about my musical tastes that I'm not entirely sure I should own up to *g*.

Regarding catching up though... expect an email in the next couple of days about that. I'm not sure how the gossip loop is tracking at the moment, but in case you haven't heard, I'm upping sticks and moving north a state in a couple of weeks. I finally ditched the job-of-evil-deadlines!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
WHAT? You and Anne both fleeing to Queensland? Life is not fair! (Though at least there are now reasons to visit the Sunshine State ...) HURRAH for lack of evil job, though. Are you off to something lovely and fulfilling?

It disturbed me how many I knew, though I have to confess the whole thing hinged on the goatherd gag. As soon as my brain helpfully supplied that, I knew where the next two hours were going.

[identity profile] i-autumnheart.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
'Fraid so... though if the number of times I've managed to see people this year is any indication, I'm likely to see people more often when I live a state away than I have managed when I am in the same city. This year has been mad in every sense of the word.

The goatherd was the highlight I must concur, but it was Three little babes that started me snickering. And I hummed Send in the Clowns for days. If you're ever beteen jobs for too long, I'm sure one of the universtity revue societies would be overjoyed to cut you a deal of some sort!

The spirit is willing indeed.

If the flesh is not too weak to do so, may I solicit your aid and that of all here?

I KNOW! I wondered if they had noticed that the rest of the world is not America. You'd think that if one is going to carefully set a story in Little Whinging, one would find out a little bit about what it might be like. Places were all quite far away from each other, and there was lots of driving in heavy snow and the town diner and... back-button.

You have seen my post in which I squee all over Snatched, right?

I always struggle in any set of questions where I am obliged to pick just one answer to a given question because so often the answer depends on circumstances not made clear in the question. It makes me twitchy.

Yes the Howards and the Scropes have always thought so too. Be well

Peace,

What American TV shows have British characters? I don't watch much TV, but I am curious.

[identity profile] maya231.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I love the details, for richness and flavor, unless they take me out of the story. Question number two, I both understand in context (usually) and go for Google. I'm a bit obsessive that way.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
Do you know, I think they would do themselves a damage in the Pendini lift! And you know, the 29th is my birthday ... just saying ...

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's fair enough, I do the same when I remember to!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
That takes me back twenty years ...

Do you know how few rhymes there are for sanctuary? ;-)

Ja, two grown men in those elevators, stuck or not. Damage, yes.

So the 29th is your birthday? Well, we shall see what we can do about that. :D
