Oooooh dear ...

Apparently, an American school principal told a lad to go home and change because his kilt could be misconstrued as crossdressing.

A local news source on the story includes this helpful line:
Kilts are traditional Scottish apparel, generally worn by men, often for formal or special occasions.
and some interesting comments.

But this source has the best picture editor ...

Dear bubba, that last link could stand as a birthday present to you! Have a very happy one, [livejournal.com profile] eynhashofet , you deserve it!

And [livejournal.com profile] silenceofcedars , I hope that the cake and good wishes fairy has rolled up to your house a little pleasantly tipsy and settled in for the duration.

EXCELLENT choice!

This comment to the local article cracked me up:
I think that demonstrating such a high degree of ignorance about the historical background of so many Americans (i.e. those of Scottish descent) deserves some sort of award.

Indeed.

And that picture is golden. :)

A modern-day Hadrian's Wall! Er ... which one of us would be considered the savages (that the Scots were)? *ponders*

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2009-05-18 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I would, however, LOVE to be in the room to see it! ;)

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-05-18 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd have voted for him!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-05-18 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's one of my favourites, and I was so happy that it only took me 45 seconds to find a news story using it. My other fave, which you can read about the veracity of, is here: http://www.snopes.com/photos/risque/queen.asp

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-05-18 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if you look at it from the Scots' view, it was to keep those dangerous bloody Southerners away ...

[identity profile] quill-lumos.livejournal.com 2009-05-18 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* or we could send Ewan MacGregor or David Tennant or Billy Boyd or even John Barrowman (a Glaswegian with an American accent) Thanks for the piccies and a smooch from Bonnie Scotland.

I wear a greatkilt myself for Renaissance Faire season. You can see a pre-surgery pic of me in it here (please be kind, that was 185 lbs ago!).

Oh, I DESPAIR for this nation. But that's a cheeky (!) photo! *smirk* Here, have some John-Barrowman-inna-kilt.

Methinks the principal doth protest too much. Of course if it bothers him then he really should not be running a school.

Am reminded of Dr Johnson: I'll come no more behind your scenes,David: for the silk stockings and white bosoms of your actresses excite my amorous propensities.

Wonders about the school production of Macbeth.

That one's great, too. As for the queen not looking very comfortable, that's pretty much how she always looks, isn't it?

I'm sure his soldiers will get mileage out of this one for a LONG time. :D

That looks brilliant!

My son was thrilled to buy a kilt while we were in Edinburgh in 2007, though he's a bit apprehensive about wearing it here. But he will wear it around the house. :)

If you chaps are sending out David Tennant to settle disputes these days, I will happily start one! *Smooches back!*

[identity profile] quill-lumos.livejournal.com 2009-05-18 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe he only comes out for kilt-based disputes, or anything involving pan-Galactic warfare.

He is seriously gorgous though isn't he?

*huggles*

I am allowed to leave Mr Brammers for him, because he understands that it is not reasonable to expect me to resist. Gorgeous, smart and funny, AND a tragic about the only TV show I have ever loved.

(Mr Brammers is allowed to leave me for Kylie Minogue, who I have met, and she is actually extremely charming.)

And perky, don't forget perky.

I think any of us are allowed to leave our husbands for David Tennant. It's actually a law in Scotland.

BTW, follow the link to see the delectable David in a kilt http://www.kiltmen.com/celeb-david_tennant.JPG

Cilian Murphy might be convinved to join that co-hort. It would be worth asking.
I think one of Barrowman's filkd is a Scot the other an American?

So I married a cross-dresser? I can live with that. I wear trousers as often as I wear skirts/dresses; more often when I’ve got hairy legs.
We saw a man at the markets on the weekend in long brown corduroy a-line skirt, leather handbag and darling wedge heel peep toe blue leather shoes. I want a pair of those shoes! He wasn’t wearing make up, feminine hair or in any way trying to look like anything other than what he was – a man very comfortable in a skirt and heels.

I can't tell you how happy I am that you remembered my fondness for the lads. Thanks heaps!

Peace,
Bubba

That was the perfect start to the day, and to end it, there was a repeat of the old Foyle's War episode he appeared in -- lovely!

*snuggles tartan Nessie, guzzles shortbread and whisky, has nap ...*

The Hot Gaelic Brute Squad, eh? I like the way your brain works.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks as though any moment that will be Barrowman OUT of a kilt! Thanks dear!

And large parts of your country are far saner.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*SNORT!*
Yes, exactly.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Now THAT is a confident soul!

And Mr Killian may be a cross-dresser, but he is a very manly one!
