Apparently, an American school principal told a lad to go home and change because his kilt could be misconstrued as crossdressing.

A local news source on the story includes this helpful line:
Kilts are traditional Scottish apparel, generally worn by men, often for formal or special occasions.
and some interesting comments.

I wear a greatkilt myself for Renaissance Faire season. You can see a pre-surgery pic of me in it here (please be kind, that was 185 lbs ago!).

That looks brilliant!

My son was thrilled to buy a kilt while we were in Edinburgh in 2007, though he's a bit apprehensive about wearing it here. But he will wear it around the house. :)
