Italy advice needed!

I'm off to Firenze again in November, and am trying to fit in some extra jaunts while there. Annoyingly, Milano looks as though it may be out of the question, sorry [livejournal.com profile] kareina ! But I have hopes for a couple of research trips for a book I am working on.

Has anyone travelled to Viterbo or Bomarzo by public transport from Roma? Is it sensible to plan either or both as day trips? Is there a reliable bus between the two? And any way of getting up to Lago di Bolsena? I have been trawling through train schedules and Bomarzo at least seems quite doable, but any local experience or tips from those who have made the trip before would be gratefully received!

I'm so jealous.

Just sayin'

Well, I am planning to bore you senseless with the pix in our Magical Midlands Mystery Tour ...

And it will probably end up a misadventure in which my mediocre Italian wages war with recalcitrant bus schedules and late-running trains ...

Echoing what Cal is saying. Give Firenze a kiss for me!

I haven't been to any of the other places, but in Firenze I can heartily recommend dining at Il Porcospino. The food is great, and the waitstaff are lovely.

That does look good! Our flat is right near my fave trattoria, but it will be good to somewhere a little posher without breaking the budget :-)

I am going to Napoli in October! ...I managed to book for the rainy season, and my first week of classes, thus demonstrating my Great Genius.

One month! Just one month...

You will love it! And the rain is not grim and ghastly rain, it just keeps the hordes of tourists at bay, making life easier for you!

Depending on where/when there is a possibility that I could meet you somewhere. I still haven't had a chance to see much of anywhere else in Italy, and would love the excuse to play tourist and spend a day or two hanging out with you. And since my contract ends in December, November is pretty much my last chance to see anything in Italy besides the geology department at the Uni here in Milan. Let me know if that sounds like a plan you'd be interested in, and we can coordinate something...

I will let you know the itinerary as soon as I have it sketched out. It is going to be a rush, but I am looking at Sienna and Pisa once the conference is over in Firenze, as well as Roma and a few stops around Viterbo and Lago di Bolsena.

[identity profile] kareina.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I would so join you for a trip to Sienna--my quick walk to town to go to a meeting at the geology dept convinced me I want to go again when I've got time to look at it. Other places are possible, too, depending on timing. What conference?

This one! http://www.costume-textiles.com/pages/page.asp?idcontent=92&lang=2

And that sounds like a plan. I will update you when I have details.

... bring me along? *fits self into a suitcase*

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
You'll have to get to Sydney, but I feel certain I could lift you, I am very strong! (As long as my friend doesn't 'help' me with my bag, she dropped my book-filled suitcase on my foot last year in London and cracked one of the bones, which led to three weeks of hobbling!)

[identity profile] phoenixacid.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* Sydney. I'll fly there immediately. My trusty flying vacuum cleaner should do the trick!

Ouch! Make sure your friend stay AWAY from you when you're checking in the luggages!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
They always want to help, because I look so clumsy when I take my giant suitcase, as I did on that trip (BOOKS! and pingrid's boots ...), but the thing is that although I am little, I am immensely strong due to a lifetime of lugging (bales of lucerne, bags of oats, foals, more recently backpacs full of books and manuscripts), while they look more muscular, but in fact are not, as they only ever go to the gym and work on ellipticals ;-)

Get that vacuum cleaner flying, Huey!

The seating and cushioning charm are a little wonky, I have to fix those before flying. Luckily, I don't have any family jewels to worry about. ;)

You lead a very interesting life. Someday you have to sit down and write a book about your oats and book-carrying experiences!

Come to Potsdam! Potsdam is the city to visit! Who's interested in all those roman thingies when you can have Potsdam! (and, yes, Berlin as a sidedish)

I may be a poor student, but I do have a second bed (once I pack away all those clothes which hide it)
