Yesterday I listed a number of people who are writing, drawing, and doing other cunning things to support the Victorian bushfire relief efforts. Since then, even more brilliant offers of help have come in.
That fine and talented teller of emotional truths,
sansa1970 , is offering a story of at least 5000 words, in your choice of original, Merlin or Harry Potter fic, any pairing, with bids closing in about 10 hours. Read her offer here.
The sexy and stylish
pir8fancier is promising to write the next chapter of any fic of your choice or 5000 words to your prompts, to the highest bidder donating to the Red Cross or one of the animal welfare appeals. Bidding closes at the end of this weekend, fic to be delivered by the end of March. Read and bid here!
bryoneybrynn , who writes excellent angst, and comedy, is offering drabbles and icons for just $10 each! She created the series of beautiful icons for hp10K, and her writing is rightly feted. Throw yourself in her direction here!
For all of you MERLIN fiends out there,
syllic , who is as wondrous as her lj name, is offering a 5000+-word fic to the highest donator before 3pm Feb 14 GMT. She's convinced that there will be no one offering scads of cash for this, I am convinced she is completely wrong. The girl is a rampant medievalist who is -- if my quick stalking is any guide -- one fine writer. Take her up on the offer at this post!
Local Victorian and bloody classy writer cest_what has a genuinely brilliant novel twist on the fic for funding approach. She is offering 5000 words in one of many fandoms INCLUDING BANDOM by the end of March to the IDEA that attracts the most bids on her post. That's right; pop along to her journal and give a prompt or look for prompts that are already there which make you go all warm and gooey inside. Then add the amount you are donating/have donated to one of the main bushfire charities. Every sum attached to that idea adds up! The idea with the highest cumulative total will be written. Bids close Monday lunch, Melbourne time, which is Sunday evening in the US and godawful o'clock in the UK. . Find something that inspires you here.
Even though she is broke and sans time,
abusing_sarcasm is unable to resist the appeal of a burned koala and has offered teeny fics to people who donate $5 and more, she may have already sold out (ETA apparently, her flist is loads of supportive chat, small amounts of cash, rock on by, she does brilliant crack and some cheerfully smutty smut that would work brilliantly as ficlets!), but check her out here, you could be in luck!
Most of these offers are mirrored over at
australia_aid , where
winterthunder has done a great job of centralising efforts. Go and buy something nice for your Valentine! He or she will love a week's food for a family or a new pair of school shoes for a kid far more than a dozen roses that just take up space and die quickly.
Finally, the very very clever and I only just learned she's Australian because I am thick
xlovexlolitax has a great entry here on donations and what is needed. There are hands-on guides for Australians and reputable online sources for everyone overseas. She's down in the fire region and has people close to her who have lost everything, if you have no cash, pop by and just let her know that you are thinking of her and her friends. Kind thoughts are never out of place.
Tonight the number of homes lost has been upgraded to over 1800, the death toll remains at 181 (though it seems certain to rise, it will take some time for the forensic specialists to be able to distinguish bodies from ash in some areas) and fire warnings have been put in place across Victoria for the next two weeks.
Even if you have no money at the moment, consider putting a dollar or two aside when you have it over the next few weeks. This emergency will not be sorted in a month or two, it will be years. And, as always, give blood if you can.
Thank you all so much for the enormous amounts that many of you have done. My running mental tally says that this small corner of HP fandom has housed and fed a family for the next month and bought new school things for the kids. All those small amounts that people described as not much, they add up to giving victims back a normal life.
