One of the exciting bonuses of general disorganisation and crapness is missing loads of people's birthdays, so, for the last week, a VERY HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY to the enigmatic [livejournal.com profile] leon783 , the lovely [livejournal.com profile] gracilejenn , who has one of the prettiest usenames on lj, the hopefully happily busy [livejournal.com profile] ishafel ,  my quite new friend [livejournal.com profile] kitkat1327 , the erudite and entertaining ceares, the genuine and lovely [livejournal.com profile] aliciajd , the young and adventurous [livejournal.com profile] bubblegumlocks (take care of yourself, gummy!), the insightful and really quite good gardener with ridiculous neighbours [livejournal.com profile] boxofdelights , and the kind and generous [profile] hitsuzen_hime (I hope things are all right with your friend).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR TODAY
to [personal profile] alaana_fair , who is as fair of heart as of name, and whose infectious glee keeps all of the fandom I see focussed on the important things (hot boys, good fic and art, and more hot boys); and to the equally lovely if sadly rarely seen these days [livejournal.com profile] ngelinadb . I hope that you both have a wonderful day with bucketloads of presents and all the people you most want to see!

I have a free hour and so am watching Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall in a River Cottage Spring episode, and he has just caught, killed and cooked a cuttlefish. While that is the sort of carnivorism I approve of, I can't help feeling that it's like eating a quite bright dog. I knew that they were clever from seeing them underwater, but ever since watching The Brainy Bunch, a documentary showing the extreme cleverness of cuttlefish (Kings of Camouflage outside Australia), I can't help think of them as slightly cranky, fluorescing, tentacled border collies.

Despite not being a big meat eater, I am not a radical animal rights person, either, because we're all parts of the ecosystem and some parts are tastier than others (which is why I stay well out of the way of large sharks and big cats!). But horses, dogs and cuttlefish ... it'd be like eating a dolphin. Vegie soup for dinner after that, I fear.
