Oh good grief ...

This week remains unhelpful.

Finger is broken (though not badly, all will be well once it stops hurting), then poor young Heath, and now MY MAGAZINE HAS FOLDED!

Now, I do not grow deeply attached to titles and workplaces for the very reason that I am familiar with the vagaries of publishing, but I really enjoyed working there and it was with the smartest and most interesting team I had ever encountered. So ... BUGGER!

Will be fine, there is redundancy pay so I do not need to dip into savings, and I also have three weeks' leave even after the hols, just ... BUGGER!

At least I can now spend a few more days in New Zealand than I looked like being able to. That's good. And if the pay-out comes through quickly and some writing gigs fall into place, I can make it up to Welly for a bit and badger people for more work! And June in Paris is back on the agenda! So really, there are plenty of silver linings, I'll just miss my workmates.

Oh poo. I'm really sorry to hear that. My favorite job ever was in a retail chain that went to the wall. I had such fun with the people I worked with that every day was like a party instead of work. I was gutted when it came to an end, but all good things do.

Glad to hear the financial situation isn't worrisome. That's always the biggie these days, isn't it?

*pets your finger carefully*

Oh, honey! I'm sorry to hear that. It's always horrible when a workplace you enjoy goes belly-up. I'm glad you're seeing the silver lining - sounds like you have a pretty awesome year planned regardless. :)

[identity profile] norton-gale.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 10:26 am (UTC)(link)
Crap! Sorry about that. Funny how things like that have a way of happening without notice. Here's hoping a new opportunity comes your way soon. And what will you be doing in Paris in June?

[identity profile] spark-of-chaos.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I was wrong about that finger, wasn't I? :/

Paris!

[identity profile] house-illrepute.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
awww, that sucks!

sending out hugs!

how'd you break your finger? did i miss that post?

[identity profile] pushdragon.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh is *that* where you are!

I'm sorry you're losing your team. Come to Melbourne. The Age is the best paper in Australia. (Such low standards it's not hard.) And did I mention the cocktail bars?

You never know, this change could help you end up somewhere you like even more. I hope so!

[identity profile] jadzialove.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, that's a shame, your team being scattered to the wind, but it seems like there's more good than bad there, and you're landing on your feet. (the low center of gravity helps! lol)

And yay! More time for travel... and fic!

Argh, what a shame. Sounds like it could have been a lot worse though - so kudos to you for seeing the silver lining!

*offers you a slice of microwaved badger* :D

[identity profile] no-mad-skillz.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, damn. (I'd echo your 'Bugger' but I don't think I could carry it off, even in print.)

*polishes your silver lining with plenty of elbow grease* Ooooh, shiny.

Unhelpful week, indeed :(

*hugs*

Yes, it is definitely the people I'll miss most, though it was lovely to be back on news after a few years playing in home-mags. Thank you for the finger pat, We tried playing softball this afternoon and it is v hard to throw with three fingers!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I had written off the June trip, but it should all be doable now! Wait and see what's offered in terms of other employment. I had one mag vying for me a while ago and decided against it because I wanted to go back to news, but it is a lovely garden title and has a good team, too. No point being too upset about things I cannot change!

Suckage. :(

[identity profile] calanthe-fics.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't bowl (ten-pin variety). Last time I tried I left three long, highly painted nails inside the holes and was left with depressingly bloody stumps.

:(

It's my friend's 30th and she is trying DESPERATELY not to spend it in Latvia, because it is always eaten by Midsummer, so I suggested that Paris would be a good compromise, easy for the Brit crew and not hard for the Baltic, Aus and Amer teams. Also .. Paris!

And yes, is bad news. At least I know I will have work. Just not the work I was enjoying. Bloody private equity owners. Although late breaking news has one of the other local moguls suggesting he is interested in buying up the whole shebang; and his publishing house is my favourite! Not holding hopes up too high, though.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, is just little break, and above the metacarpal, so I was wrong, too! Also, I have a terrible thought I said metatarsal in my previous post ... obsessed with feet!!

I am not going to plan my trip to Paris until I have the redundancy cheque in my hand. But I have the loveliest new little dress ...

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Cheers dears! Hugs are appreciated.

And my partner broke it with a nerf torpedo. Life in our house is a constant source of daftness!

[identity profile] spark-of-chaos.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, you did! And I wondered what that had to do with typing... :g:

Ah, you naughty you! What colour? :g:

OW! Stick to cricket, it's much safer!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Duck-egg blue with a green trim. It's a bit art-school, but I like it.

You can tell that I am not an anatomist. I used to help my medical student flatmates with their homework, which means I remember names, but I have had one too many hits to the head with cars, which means I screw up the order!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well ... where I was ...

I have sworn to myself that I will not go back to dailies. I want a four-day-a-week job that pays ridiculous amounts. I may need to actually sit down and write that best-selling novel I keep threatening, given the current state of publishing.

Thanks for the good wishes, my partner's work has a lot happening in Melbourne, so it is not an impossibility!

[identity profile] calanthe-fics.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I might not be able to see the ball through my blurry eyes. :( I can just about manage the keyboard.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Nerf frisbee, though beware the nerf!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Your icon says it all. It's the people that I will miss. They were so good to work with!

I will miss my four-day weeks. Is sad.

[identity profile] calanthe-fics.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be one of those comedy moments. I can see it now:

"Calanthe! Catch!"

*sniffles* "Wha? Ungh!!!"

*Nerf smacks forehead*
