In my family ...
We have a tradition that you always have to blow out all the candles that signify your real age. We live for a long time generally, so it demands lifelong cardiovascular fitness. I have just realised that I require flat cakes in future, so that the appropriate number can be arranged in practical patterns that can be lit and blown out before they melt. Sigh. And also invite more people over to eat said cake, as we will die if we attempt it ;-)
Thank you so much for your kind birthday wishes, I am coming back to edit this with proper thank yous because J is throwing more cake at me. Silly J. He knows granita is the smearing food of choice at this time of year, and you can leave out the syrup ...
Edit: I was lying about the coming back, I'll be posting again later with proper thank yous because it is 2am! And HOT! (I might sleep with the new portable air con ...)

In my family, we practice the 'reduction by 10' factor when it comes to candles. Once you're over 25, then there's one candle per decade, with an averaging up to the next candle if the second number is 5 or >. So, this year, had I had a cake, I'd've had six candles.

I think the reason i constantly remind people of my birthday is that i cannot for the life of me remember others, and expect them to remind me likewise. LOL.

Would it be cheating to keep the small round cake and blow out two candles shaped like the numbers? Not that sheet cake isn't absolutely yummy and affords a cake decorator such a large canvas upon which to work....
