It is possible that we are about to inherit more cats. Either the people on the back street who used to own two nice cats have decided to leave only the same two lights on for a few nights and put their cats on diets, or they have left the cats behind and pissed off into the realm of complete fuckers who leave their pets behind.

Biscuit, the schmoopy calico, has been up mooching food at the local Thai for a few nights in a row, while Scooter, her co cat, has just been looking thinner every time we see her. J did an emergency food run this evening, I will be doorknocking tomorrow to see whether they have fallen over and can't get up, or if I need to be taking the cats across to have their tags scanned and register their ex-owners as irresponsible shitheads with the local council and RSPCA.

These two can be the outdoor cats if they come to us. Maybe our friends on the back street would like them ...

When I was in college, there was a hungry cat that came to our house. We thought she was a stray, but the kids across the street identified her as their former cat. They didn't miss her much: in fact, it was probably better if they didn't take her back, as they did things like feed her sugar and push her down the slide (treating her like one of them). I confronted their mother about abandoning the cat, and she said "Oh, I'm going through a divorce, I don't have time for a cat." I was outraged, as I thought this was extremely irresponsible.

I also fed a cat at the place I lived before this, when it had been seasonally abandoned by an elderly man's son who was taking care of the property in the winter. It was great: the whole neighborhood bought cat food and made sure the cat would be fed when G and I were out of town, even though we didn't know at the time who owned it. Eventually the true owner returned and was happy to be reunited with his cat.

Moreover, every time we move, G has suggested I "get rid of the cats," as it makes a lot more places available to us as most rental properties don't allow pets. I have told him the cats are staying and it's non-negotiable. The only reason that I would give away the cats is if someone in our household is morbidly allergic to them.

I keep trying to like G, but sometimes he makes it hard.

Yeah, just ditching pets is so very wrong. It turns me into a frothing lunatic who is likely to slash the tyres of a particular Humvee should it reappear around here. I have just checked out the house on line, it is up for rent and appears to have been vacant for a month or more. Grrrr!

Yay for you and the other cat rescuers for keeping those moggies going!

One of G's characteristics is that he's more ruled by common sense than emotion, whereas I'm more likely to be swept away. For example, there are many hardships in store for us if we move to California, but all I can think about is being back there again.

While the move issues might be commonsense, leaving behind pets that you have taken on a responsibilty for is just … irresponsible.

If you return to CA and times are hard, at least it will be warm and the soil is good for growing things ...

We would find homes for them rather than abandon them (even G wouldn't do that!), but still, I don't care for the idea. Would someone do that with their kids?

Oh that makes me furious. I hate people who don't take care of their animals.

*hopes you haven't read my fish killing post*

I can't even imagine it. How can you do that to a poor little creature?

Oh, now I'm having flashbacks of photos from some of the animals trapped during Katrina. Ack! Fuck. Seriously, I'm too soft Brammers.

In case of fire/other emergency, I do think I would grab my children first and the pets as I could manage. Yay you for taking care of the neighbors' cats. One word about outside cats...some cats will not tolerate an indoor lifestyle. The life span of an outdoor cat, however, is an average of 3 years rather than 20 or so...I speak from personal experience--it's hard to have an outdoor cat that just disappears overnight. *sobs with guilt* But I suppose, better the outdoor cat with you-who will FEED them-then left to starve by previous bad owners.

Our cat ran away a couple of months ago. I'm still a bit sad about it but I hope someone, somewhere was kind enough to take her in and treat her with love and care. :(

Abandoning pets is so wrong. If you can't keep them, at least have the decency to try and find them home or take them to the RSPCA. I especially hate abandonned cats as they will naturally start killing the local wildlife to feed themselves. We used to get a lot of abandonned cats on campus during session breaks when the students are away. Campus groundskeepers try to round them up and take them to the RSPCA.

We have a policy of always picking up any dogs we find wandering the streets without an owner in site and take them to the RSPCA or vet rather than leave them to get skittled. As it turns out, our neighbours have the same policy, as I discovered the other morning when I woke up to a commotion and found I had three dogs in our secure back yard instead of two. Neighbours had taken in a lost little staffie (about 6 mths old I reckon) and it had managed to jump the 5' high side fence to say hello to our two. Took about 15 minutes of me boggling how I'd acquired an extra dog before the neighbour's kids enlightened me. Pup had no collar or tag so she was going to take him to the vet to see if he was chipped. Looked well cared for, so we suspect he'd done a houdini and probably had a worried family somewhere. I like our neighbours more now.

I think your current status is cat foster mom. Here, some of the pet supply stores will display fostered cats in cages with a little history and personality written by the foster parent with a phone number to call if you are interested in adopting the cat. I'm not sure how long they keep the cats: every time I go in to the Pet Supermarket near me (I have a dog.), there are 2- 5 cats in the cages for potential adoption and they are always different ones. I think the foster parent has to take them to the vet first to confirm they are healthy and get them vaccinated and spayed/neutered before they can put them up in the shop.

Man, what a-holes, if they have left them. I can't believe people do that, and yet it's how I ended up with two cats, sigh. You and me, b, we're stray cat magnets...

Just thank God they have someone like you around to care for them. And OMG YES please do report the former owners. It incenses me that people would treat animals like disposable razors.

people are crap, aliens told me so! i cried for days when i had to re-home my ginger boys (having made sure they were going to a safe, cat-friendsly environment), and in all other cases it has been the cats who did the leaving (faithless hussies, the lot of them!). thus far i have rescued two kittens from being bucketed, saved one for the depredations of horrid bogan children, and taken one home when it was dumped at the hotel i was working at. i hope it goes some way to redressing the balance.

Hmmm, there is steam shooting out my ears and nostrils right at this point in time. The wankers should be hung out to dry for neglecting their pets like that!

I would dearly love a pet cat, and I torture myself everytime I walk past the pet shop near work (especially since today they had 3 black kittens and 2 little ginger kittens). Anyway the reason I don't have pets is because I rent and I don't know if the next place I live in will let me have a cat, and it isn't fair on the animal to move them from home to home all the time. Another thing that pisses me off it people who decide they no longer want their cats after they stop being a tiny little kitten. Pets are lifetime commitements people, not something you can dump when the novelty wears off or when they become to difficult to move with, at least find them a good home before abandoning them.
