blamebrampton: 15th century woodcut of a hound (Default)

We really need to look in a mirror now and then ...

It was cold and wet in Sydney today (inasmuch as you can call 14C cold, but the wind chill is vicious and there is no central heating to be found), so Mr Brammers and I rugged up and then went out for lunch.

As we walked into the pub (Sunday salmon special!), we attracted some strange looks. I thought little of it at the time, but then Mr Brammers came back from ordering at the bar. I realised that he (all but 6 feet tall and solidly muscled (rugger bugger looking, as opposed to my usual polo prat)) was wearing black jeans, a long-sleeved black top, a black possum-fur beanie, black workboots and black gloves. I began to giggle.

He looked down and declared 'I look like a house breaker!'

I giggled harder.

He shook his head. 'You can't talk. You look like a character from a children's novel.'

I looked down. Oversized-jacket, silk pinafore with flower appliqué, black tights, chunky shoes, looped plaits and a cloche hat with a flower on it.

'Oh god,' I said, realising why people had stared. 'We're Milly Molly Mandy and her hired goon ...'

Mr Brammers proceeded to mutter 'Milly Molly Mandy, mafiosi ...' until the food arrived. It's days like this that keep him from being smothered in his sleep when he fails to do the dishes.

Y'all sound like an interesting pair. Any chance of seeing a picture?

Milly Molly Mandy plus mafioso equals?

[identity profile] wemyss.livejournal.com 2009-06-14 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Milly Molly Mandy of Foy and Hartlepool, of course.

Thanks for my Sunday morning smile. I wish you did have a pic but [livejournal.com profile] leochi's art will suffice. :)

I wish I could have seen that. *laughs*

What a lovely adventure! and after I googled the Milly Molly Mandy to see a picture I realized that I have to go and look for those books for my girl at the library.
Inspiring!

That drawing is awesome, and exactly as I had pictured BB & her mafioso.

There are a few of them around over here -- it's a good country for strong, often somewhat silent, but intensely comedic and fundamentally decent men.

Of course, there are oodles of boofheads, too ...

Alas, no, we are Gen X and don't take many photos (for the most part, I had one girlfriend in the 80s who took a Polaroid every day to make sure she did not copy her outfit, but she was a lunatic ;-)

This is MMM: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MzW8sUZhC9o/SLDstUS9I2I/AAAAAAAAAtM/HhWZAT0LRhc/s320/milly+molly+mandy.jpg one of my fave children's book characters if only because she was so astonishingly odd!

Oh good lord, Leochi! I love it! Bit more colourful than the original, but you have J to the very life!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
He's a delightful man ;-)

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I met him at a party, a few hours later he fell in my lap and declared that I was his destiny. It will be 14 years next month!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Alas, we are not of the picture taking generation ;-)

You will be pleased to know that I knew you were going to make that joke, just as I am pleased that you did, in fact, make it.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh you Gen Y person! We fortysomethings live our lives scribing the occasional poignant reminiscence into our leather-bound notebooks with our elegant vintage fountain pens!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a great drawing! More colourful than my wardrobe, but now I feel I want a blue coat!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
HEY! You know for a fact that I am a bit taller than that!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Next is out, as we haven;t shopped for the wedding the one after, but the one after that is still quite possible provided I don't buy too big a wedding gift ;-)

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You would have giggled, as so many of our neighbours did ...

[identity profile] spacefragments.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
well draw a picture then. :p just kidding.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
They're lovely books. She was such an odd little owl, and her adventures so simple, but to this day the line drawings make me happy and her lovely wanderings around her village remind me of how childhoods should be.

If I ever recover my drawing ability, I will sketch it up!
