Serendipity

Mr Brammers and I wandered up to Newtown for dinner. On our way back down the hill, we saw a notice on the shop that used to sell beaded animals from South Africa. Espresso Bar Opening Soon! it said.

Mr Brammers looked at me. 'Hmmmm ...' he said. 'I'm not sure how they expect to compete here. There are three other cafes in 100m and two bars.'

I looked at him for a long moment before laughing. 'Don't be ridiculous. All they need to do is offer three or four different coffee beans and made to your liking with a comfy chair or two and you will be living there. I'll be up in town and walking home and the phone will ring and it will be you saying "Baaaaabe, can you grab me a coffee as you come home?" It will be chock-full of local posers and caffeinistas and you will all be happy to pay $3.75 for a small cup as long as the beans are fair trade.'

His jaw set as he prepared to argue, then he cracked and smiled and said, 'The sad thing is, that's entirely true.'

'It's so unfair, they are always opening shops that are perfect for you,' I groused.

'Silly spot for it, though. They should have used the old bread shop,' he said as we continued to walk.

Thirty seconds later we were passing the old bread shop. There was a development notice on it. Mr Brammers whooped and jogged over to read it. He turned back to me, with a grin plastered all over his face. 'This one is for you!' he declared.

I stepped up to read it.

That is right, you can never move.

And the Chocolate and Dessert Bar had better be open next time I come down for a visit.

That spare room is available to all!

*\o/*

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
We do have a spare room! I have written a glowing recommendation to the council as to why this application should be approved ;-)

[identity profile] annes-stuff.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent!

[identity profile] curia-regis.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
I want one of those near me. :(

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You are always welcome to visit, but I do suggest pimping out the idea to any small businesspeople you know!

Chocolate and Dessert Bar

Yes, I think I could eat desserts for 16 hours a day...

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You and the Buttons and Mr are welcome to pop by! Don't forget, there's a bar component, so you could spend an hour drinking, too

[identity profile] shocolate.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
the mr won't do Australia, for spider shaped reasons - if I win the lottery I am coming over for Christmas, to be made miserable by the Ashes!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been here for ages and not been bitten by a single spider! Most of them are harmless and friendly. We have a few in the laundry who manage our mosquito population for us, bless em.

Damn, now I'll never lure you to Melbourne.

*cries*

Mr C laughed and sympathised wholeheartedly when I read this out to him. Except for the bit where you're amazingly brilliant and your brain is awe inspiring, we're quite the matched set.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
But just think of all the reasons you have for visiting me! And Erko is only 15 minutes from the airport, so you needn't immerse yourself in the greater Sydney horror.

I would also point out that you are quite amazing yourself, you great duffer!

[identity profile] ant-queen.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dear...I can foresee in the near future that you and Mr Brammers won't actually be living in your house, you'll be time-sharing between these new cafes and the house will be kept mostly for the kitties.

I'd also check your home for sneaky market research bugs. They clearly have you guys fixed as their target market.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It won't be that bad, there is only so much creme Anglaise I can consume before the mild lactose intolerance takes me down ;-)

Perhaps those people who hang out on the village green while we all wander around rabbiting on about how the world should be are secretly entrepreneurs!

[identity profile] raitala.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Does sound like the neighbourhood has its demographic down nicely :)

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I have written to the council in support of the application. It may be the least coherent letter of support they receive, but it will be one of the most transparent ;-)

[identity profile] raitala.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Pudding! *gimme hands*

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It was longer and with more grammar, but yes, that was the essence of it ;-)

[identity profile] pushdragon.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
*packs bags and starts to walk*

See you in a couple of weeks. Hope they're open by then.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I have sent a letter of keen support for the application off to council. Believe me, when they post their opening date, you will be one of the first people I call! And our spare room is clean and comfy.

[identity profile] dookadook.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The interactions between Mr Brammers and yourself are absolutely brilliant. You help me retain my hope that relationships can actually work ;)

[identity profile] dookadook.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Umm... that came out sounding whinier than I meant it too.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Not at all; I went through a period of wondering if the age of functional adult relationships had passed, too.

I think the trick is to look past people you would generally look for; he's someone from outside almost all of my cultural groups, but we have very similar senses of humour, so it works well!

I have to say that even now, I look at my peer group and only feel that 50% of the relationships there will still be there in 10 years, and the last 10 years have sadly shown that such a belief is often right.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
He is a lovely lovely man. Even when he is snoring and stealing all the cats and blanky ;-)

[identity profile] ciel-vert.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha that's amazing!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they have perfectly judged their target market, knowing the people who live around here ;-)

[identity profile] deensey.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooooh. WIN.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Especially since it's 500m from your house!!

[identity profile] deensey.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
EXACTLY THIS!

[identity profile] dysonrules.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
COFFEE AND CHOCOLATE AND DESSERT??? I am moving.

*grin*

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I will find you a lovely place to live!

[identity profile] bryoneybrynn.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This whole post is kind of adorable. :)

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to say that if a cafe selling eclairs and creme caramel opens up near me, my days of looking remotely slender may be DOOMED BEYOND HOPE!!!!

[identity profile] anthraxia.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Things could get worse - Haighs could open a shop next door.

[identity profile] coffeejunkii.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
there can never be too many coffee shops or dessert bars. especially not in close proximinity to one another!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The coffee bar is between the drag pub and the fortune teller's, and just up from the dodgy curry takeaway. I think they will do very well in attracting clientele from all three venues ;-)

(Looking at the above, it occurs to me that I live in an odd suburb.)

[identity profile] spark-of-chaos.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! Clearly, this is a ruse to make this neighbourhood perfect for you. It must be a conspiracy!

(Thank god I don't have such a shop in my immediate area because I will be rolling instead of walking in no time at all. I'd *live* in it!)

[identity profile] tsosh.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's like the world rearranges itself around you... lol
"Chocolate and Dessert Bar" sounds really good! (unless you're vegan, like me. then it's just painful)

[identity profile] pingrid.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
A trip to Sydney is looking better and better! :D Not that we don't have desserts here, but you know me, other people's food is always vastly superior!

If you make it a policy always to walk on your hands to get there, you'll easily burn off the calories to justify it. *nods* ;)

[identity profile] enchanted-jae.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm coming to live with you. I'll call you when I have my travel plans confirmed.

Heh.

[identity profile] shanes-lullaby.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha! Lovely.
