I need to finish writing, and thawing, but I wanted to take this opportunity to offer a brief product endorsement. I own one of these umbrellas (which I also use as a parasol):
Although I often buy things because they are practical, I bought this because it is very pretty. Tonight, I used it walking home through storming rain and winds of 50-120km/h (30-75mph). I had it up most of the way, even in the bit up on the open hill ridge as I walked past the university. As umbrellas failed all around me, and other walkers gave up, folded theirs and just accepted the soaking, my delicate frilly thing held up like a champ. Well done, Boston brollies!

I'm impressed! Pretty AND practical!

(My umbrella, sadly, was one of those that failed tonight).

Oh, poor you! I felt so sorry for everyone I saw lose theirs, though I admired the one woman who watched it go, clearly took it as a sign, turned around and ran into the pub she'd just passed ;-)

I tell you, I've never been so glad for that lane between Wilson St and Abercrombie as I was tonight: totally protected the whole way down it thanks to the tall ugly buildings on both sides. I felt very guilty ordering home delivery, but Mr B failed to shop, so I tipped the driver generously.

Staying in is good!

Unfortunately, I'm still out, so I'll need to brave the elements going back home.

I hope you managed to travel in one of the relatively calm spots! Or are still tucked into somewhere warm and with delicious provisions!

Talking of which, you're at Sydney Uni aren't you? If you have some spare cash, Blacksheep Bar down where Funky Bar used to be (a few doors down from the cheap latenight chemist) has really yummy food!

Thanks, I did manage to travel in one of the calm spots. Now I'm safely back home, warm and dry. Yay!

Actually, I'm at The Other Uni. That is, UNSW. :P I'll keep that in mind though, because I fairly regularly visit Usyd for one thing or another. You're referring to the Newtown strip, right? I never know where to eat there, there are so many choices!

If you're ever near UNSW, or if the weather decides to turn sunny and you visit Coogee Beach, there's a really nice fresh pizza place called Arthur's Pizza. There's a branch in 'The Spot' near Randwick Junction (that is, near the side of UNSW that's closest to Coogee Beach), and another branch near Chauvel Cinemas in Paddington.

Speaking of delicious food, do you know any good places that serve African cuisine? I don't remember ever eating any, which is a real shame; I've lived in Sydney most of my life, and it's such a multi-cultural (cuisine-wise at least) city.

Do I what! There aren't as many as there were when I first moved to Sydney. Back then there were a lot of South African anti-apartheid people who had come over here as refugees and several opened good eateries, but most have since closed as many people moved home. These days it's mostly North African, but still good!

African Feeling on King St in Newtown is pretty good, and has a lot of representative dishes from around the continent. African Express on Enmore Rd is run by the same people who used to run the North African restaurant on King St and has many of the same dishes. When they say spicy, they mean it, but it is still delicious, and the prices and service are both good.

There are meant to be some good places on the North Shore, but I have gone native and refuse to cross the Bridge ;-)

For ingredients if you want to try a spot of DIY, the old market on Enmore Rd has closed, sadly, but Fiji Markets on South King St has a good range of spices and tinned goods and great prices. I think I have seen a new African deli in the area, but am drawing a mental blank on where ...

And yes. Blacksheep is pretty much in the centre of the strip, near where Church St meets King St (and if you have a free day, wandering around St Stephens cemetery on Church St is a great way to spend an afternoon, so lovely!) Though on weekends, the food on South King is usually better during the day, and Enmore Rd a better bet at night: too many pubs up in central Newtown and it gets a bit feral on the weekend!

I get over to UNSW fairly regularly for ukulele lessons, so when the weather improves, I'll try to fit in a pizza mission!

And HURRAH for warm and dry!

That is an awesome looking umbrella. Mine is tragically broken and hasn't been helpful this week at all.

I do have a wonderfully pretty but unuseful parasol I got from the China attraction at Disney World 8 years ago. Somehow I don't think it's going to help much...

Alas … And bugger! Though it is so hard to find a good new one when a loved old one turns its ribs up.

I think it's something to do with the shape at the top. It makes it harder or impossible to turn inside out.

Style AND substance!

Though I am happy when people put their brolleys away as I have nearly lost an eye several times because of inconsiderate brolley carriers.

And people who put them up in a crowd with no regard for the people standing right next to them actually get told off!

I think you might be right. Though it was a close-run thing …

Brolly abusers are simply evil people. If it's absolutely imperative they not get wet, they can at least buy one of those narrow domed umbrellas that come down over your shoulders!

One of the reasons I like living in Sydney is that there is a low population density, so fewer problems with brolly conflict. And native Sydneysiders are brilliant at heat but rubbish at rain, so they tend to crowd onto buses instead. Which is a danger as Sydney drivers all have water-soluble brains …

I often have to tell people where I got it from, and small girls are always saying 'Ooh Mummy, LOOK!', which is a sure sign of an attractive brolly ;-)

The mental image of a little one being excited over your umbrella made me smile. <3 Glad yours held up, so no more colds and flus for you!

I sometimes feel like a weirdo for carrying a parasol on sunny days, but the huge smiles on small girls' faces make it all worthwhile. And it's started a real trend around my area, too!

And yes, me too! I want to have the flu vaccine for this year and have to wait until I am fully over my cold. There are a lot of nasty bugs in Sydney this year!

Oooo! Thank you for sharing! I've fallen in love with dark brocade patterns after seeing Grimmaild Place in the movies, and 221B on Sherlock. I would really go for a couple of those underbrellas.

I've had several of their models and they are really quite good -- though today's effort was above and beyond the specs!

And now it's gone again.... I think I should just go to bed.

Anyway, it's an absolutely lovely umbrella. Miss you!
