Kitten news

Tonight Jones met the ukulele.

He's not convinced …

My cat hates music. My husband will whistle just for the "fun" of seeing her leave the room.

That's so mean! All three of the cats here like singing, and Cookie and Mon are keen on the ukulele. Jones is a bit more convinced than he was: I think it was just the shock of the new!

Our senior cat used to come when someone whistled the Malaysian national anthem. We never knew why.

Bwahahahahahaha! Do you have any Malaysian restaurants in your neighbourhood? The Thai on our corner has had a long run of neighbourhood cats in its thrall ;-)

We suspected that it was something to do with a particular interval sequence of notes somewhere in the tune, that said "come and see what is going on!" in his little kitty brain.

Everyone's a critic …

That's because cats prefer percussion...

...and, you know, stringed instruments... cat gut. You could try explaining that's an industrial lie to put the competition on the back foot, but I've found cats also prefer a good conspiracy plot over the obvious or logical. Which is why Bellamy thinks the fridge is out to get him.

But the ukulele IS a percussion instrument! And the strings are nylon. None of that fancy pants violin stuff ;-)

I think it was the first time Jones had heard live music. He kept looking from me to the stereo with an expression of 'But the music is meant to come out of THERE!'

I recently set up my record player again and have been playing albums I haven't listened to in years. Bellamy is fascinated by it, and sits and watches the record go around - but only for as long as there is music playing. If the record has a final loop, as soon as he works out there is no more music coming, he loses interest. As long as the music plays, he sits on the counter and stares at the record like it was a mousehole.
