I remember when I was little, and all of a sudden there were all these Chileans about, and I thought it was because they, like the Argentines, had taken to polo in droves. A few years later, I had the horrified realisation of what was actually happening.

Mm, yeah. Most of my immediate family left too; my dad left right away for Spain, his sister went to Switzerland, my mom and I joined my dad and eventualy ended up in Canada, one of her sisters went to Germany and the other went to the US. I thought all families were scattered around the world when I was little.

It's always weird to me when I hear the word "diaspora," knowing I'm part of one.
