Brammers: Oh god, apparently five of my friends have invited me to be on Facebook.

Brammers' young friend: OMIGOD! I can't believe you're not on Facebook! You should totally be there!

B: I'm old, dear, the first number in my age is a four.

BYF: You're NOT old. And besides, my mum is in her forties and she's on Facebook.

B: I'm old and I have no children I need to stalk on Facebook. Also, I'll just be over there having a little cry for the next few minutes ...

Back to the work, editing and writing. Slowly catching up!

I'm having similar experiences lately - people emailing me inviting me to be their friend, some of their names I don't even recognize. I'm a hold-out, but I'm going to give in as soon as I find time to set up yet another internet point of entry because it does seem like an easy and relatively painless way to keep in touch with people. But it's amazing how frumpy I've become. I'm suspicious of Twitter and I still haven't figured out what a "phone app" is.

Hee! (Confession: I do have a Twitter account, but only to keep track of people who are travelling.)

My phone makes calls and sends messages, that's it. I think I need some parts of the day that are unconnected to the web. If Tim Berners-Lee can do it, so can I!

But if you stop holding out, I'll not judge you: it does seem an easy way to stay in touch. I just found out a friend is in London, which explains why I haven't seen him for a while ...

You're certainly not too old! But do read their TOS first, they reserve some pretty extensive rights to your stuff, like the right to use any pic you've uploaded and manipulate it first if they like. Which probably isn't a huge deal in practice, but be aware. Also, it used to be that you couldn't actually delete your profile if you wanted to leave - don't know if they've changed that. I hardly ever ever use my facebook account, but YMMV! :)

That's one of the things that bothers me. The fact that I have a hard time keeping up with the people in my life as it is probably the major factor, though.

Well, this young person thinks it'd be pretty awesome if you were on Facebook, and would like to agree that you're not old, either, and also to point out that her mother who is in her fifties has an account. (Even if it is to stalk me with!)

LOL you should totally get a facebook account! I have on and I must admit the people I've managed to reconnect with is quite awesome! Especially friends you never though you'd hear from again. Plus its so random you can see what people are thinking and such.

I have friends from work who are in their fifties at least and still trolling facebook, I wouldn't worry about seeming stalkerish if I were you.

I have multiple 4's, honey. And I refuse to do the facebook thingy, or the myspace thingy, or that twit thingy. My cousin keeps sending me facebook invites - I shun him madly.

It's nothing to do with being old, and everything to do with choosing not to follow a fad for the sake of it. I'm not sure what it is about those forums that I object to (actually, there's a lot of things I do know I object to, but won't go into here), but I do object to them.

Maybe it is about being old after all?

Why would I want that guy that used to pick his nose in 8th grade saying hey to me? Er? Who are you and why are you excited that we've reconnected? Or god, my first boyfriend. or my first prom date or my first... yeah. Do. Not. Want.

Have moved away from my home town and LOVE the fact that I don't get asked 'I haven't seen you in ages! What's new?' by virtual strangers that expect me to give them actual answers. o.O

Canadians, for some reason, really love Facebook. Like early on, huge numbers of us were on it. I have no idea why. And lots of "old" people are on it. I don't really use it. I can only handle one social networking site at a time. Even twitter is too much for me! lol But I clearly have issues, both emotional and organizational. I'm sure you're savvy enough to figure it out.

BTW, how is your foot and/or shoulder? I'm a horrible friend and can't even remember your injuries. *irons ears ala dobby* I wish you'd come to Canada. I was sad you didn't make it to Azkatraz. Though perhaps it was for the best. I seemed to spend all my time petting EVERYBODY and, and I seem to recall you saying you're more of the firm handshake type! lol

Both of my parents got one before me and they're both in their 50s. Until fairly recently, the extent of my dad's computer knowledge was how to turn one on. (It's still pretty limited, thumb drives confound him.)

Why would I want to be on Facebook?!? Because really, my idea of a good time is NOT "reconnecting" with people I left behind ON PURPOSE!

Just sayin'. If I'd wanted to stay friends, I would've kept in touch. And if you happen to be one of the two people I would've kept in touch with, if not for your crappy letter-writing skills, you are likely not any better on Facebook.

Also, I am incapable of social networking without the sort of information that I'd rather employers didn't have easy access to. I like to work somewhere at least two months before anyone starts going "Who? Oh, yeah, she's the weird one."

The first number in my age is a four too and I have a Facebook account. I believe it got started when a friend invited me and I needed to join to see some photos she had. Then my sisters (both with ages that start with threes) found my account and "friended" me and started sending me all sorts of silly games which I ignored. During Thanksgiving at our dad's, my youngest sister started complaining I have no photos or pretty much anything at all in my profile and demanded my password. She then put this whole profile in. She also pretty much "friended" our whole family to this account. Apparently, I was the only one in our generation (of which I am one of the eldest) not adequately connected. Later, multitudes of people I've known have found me through this account. I kinda passively use it. I don't contact others through it but they seem to contact me. I get invitations to cousins' baby showers through it.

I have so little time, my theory is that when my friends realise I've not responded to facebook invites for a while, they'll ring or email me ;-)

I think that facebook is designed for people exactly unlike me: I hate having my photo taken, would rather write something long than short, and like to be able to hide when I want to ;-)

It isn't about age--my mother loves her facebook account, and she's nearly 70. Some of the people you know resist it because they left people behind "on purpose". However, I've moved enough that I'd lost touch with people that I've really, really missed, and I am overjoyed to have found so many of them again.

I really don't feel like I should splay myself all over the intawebz just so some random person who barely remembers me can trip over my account somewhere and say um.hi?

I have a FB account because it gives old friends and my extended family a way to keep in contact without any of us actually having to track addresses (email or post) and phone numbers. Having the account is different from actually *posting* anything on FB, though: I mostly don't bother with that bit. It's mostly just an online Christmas Card list.

I don't understand the appeal of Twitter: if I'm doing something so interesting that I really feel the need to tell the world (v.rare), then I'm going to need more than 140 characters to talk about it anyway.
