One more upside thing, Laura Marling! She's so young she's practically a foetus, but she has a beautiful and lyrical voice that is enormously accessible and without the bombast of some of the other Meaningful Young Women singers of the day. Her songs shift across themes by turns epic, angsty and amusing, but always with a wry edge of humour and charm.

I've been playing her album on high rotation this week, and am considering reviewing it, even though it's not a book. Check out Ghosts, her most commercial song to this point, with wacky but intterestingly arty video attached. And don't be fooled by the simplistic musical opening, it sets the scene for a shift to complexity that is rewarding without being pretentious or overwhelming for a three-minute pop song.

Ooh, I didn't know she has an album out now. I have her London Town EP, but it'll be good to hear more from her.

Have you heard her in that Mystery Jets song, young love? That's where I first heard her, I love it. :D

I haven't! I'll have to hunt it down. And I am v jealous, the EP seems to be all sold out :-( Fingers crossed everything will be released again later. I first heard New Romantic on Rage, the late Fridays and Saturday night video show, and it was such a burst of freshness against the over-produced egocentricity that made up most of the other clips that I fell in love then and there. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks, but I like to buy CDs and hold them in my hot little hands. It goes back to the days of saving up for vinyl, even buying at iTunes doesn't have the same joy ... This one is now a mission! And I have lots of good indie and second hand places around here and will be able to check out the UK soon, too.

At my age I am just excited to still know the names of a few young people musicians ;-)

Pfft. There's no age limit with music! It's a free-for-all. :D

I used to think turn 40 = start listening to Phil Collins solo albums. I was v scared! It did happen to a few of my friends.

Don't panic, it was only the ones who already thought that one should have a pair of good jeans for going out and that it was inappropriate to wear dark lipstick over a certain age. You can spot Nigels years in advance ;-)

What a strange but awesome video. I'm such a sucker for strange forms of animation and this definitely did it for me. 8D

Coolly crazy, isn't it? If you like wacky video, you might also like Sia. Her voice is not as gorgeous as Laura's, but she writes v cool music and lyrics. Glad you liked it!
