Oh FFS ...

I just read a journalist's opinion that the failure of Chicago to secure the 2016 Olympics is indicative of the fact that Obama is now seen as an unpopular figure. That comment has as much intellectual rigour as the assertion that my current choice of dark red lipstick spells the end days for the colour pink.
Bugger that malarky, instead, HURRAH! Well done, Brazil! At last, the first Olympics in South America! I believe the 'failure' of North America to secure the 2016 games probably stems from FOUR Summer Olympics being held in the US, one in Canada and one in Mexico. Is it too much to ask that South America be allowed one? Similarly, bad luck, Tokyo, but you've had them before and Madrid, really? Barcelona was not that long ago and Europe has been the home of most summer olympic games, so it's not a big ask to share this one out.
News from Samoa and Sumatra is still depressing, now Sicily has seen a serious mudslide kill many people. I hope that the Italians on my flist have all their friends and family acounted for. In Sydney, it is raining, which is lovely.
Many thanks to those who were able to give the Red Cross some help. It is by thinking of each other that we are at our best, and when we can sometimes extend a hand to strangers with no hope of personal reward for it, I think we feel most thoroughly a part of the human race.

Have been shilling for Red Cross donations about the place. and in fact, must make use of that NZ Red Cross page I've had open in a tab for days now. *facepalm*

Date: 2009-10-03 09:23 am (UTC)Also, one of my co-workers is from the Philippines and she was able to confirm that her friends were ok via Facebook. I hate the facebook but I LOVE that people are able to use to it in times of crisis to let their loved ones know they're ok! :D We live in strange times, my friend, very, very strange.

Also, I miss you! :(
