I like to roll my eyes and shake my head in a superior manner when Young People of my acquaintance talk about things like Twitter and online polls. Mostly because I am still bitter about low levels of involvement in actual real world politics (they need us to pay close attention if they are to act remotely responsibly, people!), but also because it usually involves people I have never heard of, which makes me feel old and miserable.

NOT THIS TIME! John Barrowman and Neil Patrick Harris are fighting it out for the title of Gay Man of the Decade, using Twitter as their battlefield. Read a fabulous round-up of the story here at AfterElton. Felicia Day, Nathan Fillion and Neil Gaiman have all weighed in on the debate, but not as amusingly as the AE writer. Worth it for the pix alone.

As to the winner, well, they're both excellent.

Hee! They're both utterly adorable! I like the jelly wrestling idea...

Alas, I ended up voting for Sir Ian ...

I didn't even know Dougie Howser was gay - shows how current I am!!!

John gets my vote though. I'm a shallow girl, and he's by far the prettiest *g*

He's a bit splendid, lots of community action in sensible ways, from supporting the young to talking about the fact that gay marriage strengthens communities rather than causing any issues in them.

I would have voted for John, but then I saw Sir Ian and had to vote for him, because he's my favourite!

Oh, come on, NPH rules, and aas much as I love JB, he's got to lose to the better man. But isn't that fight hilarious?

It's thoroughly brilliant, from both of them! But I voted for Sir Ian McKellan, because he has been so brilliant for so long.

If second preferences were available, he would have mine, he's a delight!

I finally know what Dougie's real name is! Go me!

Voted for Ian! Always admire him.

YAY! Ian fans unite!

And you're as mad as Mr Brammers, who refers to Starship Troopers as Dougie's Space Gestapo.

*twirls you around the room*

OMG that's too funny! Dougie's Space Gestapo indeed. XD

I voted for Sir Ian myself. Happy New Year darling.

As did I once I looked at the proper list. He may not provide as many giggles on Twitter, but he is thoroughly splendid.

Happy New Year to you! So far, it has been quite satisfactory, but in eight hours, work. Should sleep a bit before then ...

But where have they hidden the actual poll?!

You need to click back to the earlier story and follow the link from there. SO helpful! (I've not linked to it in hopes that Sir Ian and Mr Sulu will have late runs at the title!)

Aaah! I'm a bit torn. Ian's been fabu for ages, but I do think that John Barrowman has probably done more for The Cause this past decade. But I don't particularly like JB! Though I did LOVE Joan Rivers' comment when she saw his picture, not knowing who he was: "He looks like a straight Tom Cruise!"

AHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh god, that's priceless. Ian has been a major campaigner for economic rights for gay partners over the last 10 years, and also has excellent taste in same if the young man he was sporting in Sydney the other year is anything to go by.

You could always vote for Mr Sulu: Geek Chic and a major gay marriage advocate!

Nah, I ended up voting for Ian. The young'uns can have it next decade!

LOL! That's absolutely hilarious~! I love them both but I've been a fan of NPH since his Doogie Howser days so my vote has to go to him. Still, I can't wait to see who will come out in support of JB once the day really gets going in the UK.

I do like NPH a great deal, on and off screen. What they need is one of those 1970s variety shows where they both team up for friendly rivalry shown in song and dance!

YES! this is exactly what needs to happen.

Thanks for the fun link. i ended up voting for NPH because I really admire all the community work he does. But it was a tough call between him and Ian.

pssst, you know Twitter is mostly peopled by adults and business folk. okay, granted mostly young adults. but still.

I follow nph on Twitter and nathan fillion (who is in nph's court) so was going to go vote for him, but couldn't not vote for sir ian. he and George have been out for so long and both in a much more hostile time. I love that jb and nph are doing such good work, as well as being so lovely, but against gandalf and sulu? no contest. :D

Look, I'm as much in favour of totty as anyone.

But this is fundamentally unserious, isn't it. I mean, leave aside that it's Lads Only (were they afraid UA Fanthorpe shd sweep the poll?), one cannot really take seriously such a poll in which, by way of example, Tatchell, Fry, Dale, Boles, and Alan Bennett are absent, can one.
From: [identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com
I was thinking about the list, and decided that some people may have been excluded for the same reason that The Queen is often left off the list of 'Most Influential' whatevers: they exist on a level that is above and outside what the listmakers can conceive.

Sir Ian was a safe vote for me.
