I thought the point of the poll was to find out which are already the most read fics - to click on the ones you've already read and remembered, not to go read them now then click on them. (And that may be why they've dropped off - lack of memorability. I've only read "Crup-tion," so I can't say for sure.)

I thought the Housemartins' version of "Caravan of Love" was the original. I've never found an earlier.
