To those on my flist who celebrate Yule at the solstice, I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Today is a bit auspicious, astrologically speaking: both the solstice and a lunar eclipse. I took a photo of the eclipse just after moonrise in Sydney, sadly a little after totality (couldn't be seen from here), though, having said that, there'd be little point taking a photo at a total eclipse ...

As to the fabbo Christmas lights we saw the other night, here's a shot:

The tree is made of LED flex with hazard lights and recycled plastic cones over orange hazard mesh:

And the trunk is old milk crates:

It's champion!

That's an awesome tree - and so very orange.

I went out to the point to watch the eclipse from here, but sadly the cloud on the horizon was just too thick to see the 15 mins of totality that should have been visible. So only the re-emergence from here, as well.

I want to know who works for the RTA down there, because it's a concerted amount of borrowing ;-)

According to the news, there will be another one in the not too distant future, so here's hoping it puts on a better show for us!

Well if the RTA *will* just leave their lights and mesh on the side of the road... or it could have been good timing at Reverse Garbage as well, I guess!

Even with missing totality, it was a nice night to be out on the point. There must have been about a hundred people just sitting out on the concrete plinth where the Dawn Treader was, watching the moon rise over the bay. It was king tide, with the water almost up to the top of the sea wall and dead calm so that the reflected moonlight came up to everyone's feet. I wish I'd had a camera, as the temptation to try and take trick 'walking on moonlight' shots was pretty overwhelming!

That sounds lovely! Mr B and I were on the railway bridge, and people kept look at us as though we were nutters. Erko is not a hotbed of amateur astronomy, alas.

Great recycled tree!

I didn't know there was an eclipse, but the moon looks extra beautiful today with the clear sky and clean air.

Full moon and solstice -- what a lovely combo!

Thanks for the photo of the eclipse. It was too overcast with clouds here last night to even SEE the moon, let alone the eclipse. I was really disappointed!

It was pure good luck that it happened early enough for my camera to make the shot in the bright city light. Most people walked by wondering what the hell I was doing standing on the bridge taking photos -- they all looked down onto the railway, despite me pointing the camera up.

Why? The moon turns red. It's not like taking a photo of a new (dark) moon. Lunar Eclipse Dec.21.2010 for instance.

I think it needs to be more properly night for the red effect, rather than late twilight as it was here. All we were expecting from people who were in the parts of the country where the moon rose earlier was a red ring around the umbra, which my crappy camera would not have caught.

Such a good tree! And they are having a jolly little impromptu street party down there of an evening when people come down to look, so it's even more fun!

Being in an area of townhouse and apartment dwellers no one has really done much, let alone gone all out, with Christmas lights around my neighbourhood :(
Might walk over towards Hughes and Garran tomorrow evening and see if anyone has done anything, all tired out from walking to my errands today....

The tree looks awesome!

My brother and I saw the eclipse as the moon was about half visible after the eclipse. There was too much low lying cloud until about 7:15pm or so and then it slowly became more visible as the cloud shifted.

There's supposed to be another one in July and December 2011
