Good luck North Queenslanders.

Cyclone Yasi took out one of the weather stations tracking it this morning. A station that was built to withstand Category 5 cyclones. Up north they have either fled or barricaded themselves inside.

For those of you abroad, yes, that's the same state that spent most of the last two months underwater. Bloody hell.

And you Americans in the Big Snow, keep safe! Stay inside and put an extra dog on the bed!

Can we have a carbon tax now, please? It has to cost less than mopping up after so many extreme weather events.

that's one big storm :(. when is it supposed to make landfall?

It started at about 11pm and will be going through the night, with storm surges following in the morning. There is minimal news coming out of Queensland tonight because everyone is battened down and not going out for anything.

In trivia news, the storm cell is allegedly the size of North America -- I hope they mean the United States ... ah ... perhaps they do mean North America after all:

Just turned the news back on and Egypt is going to hell in a handbasket, too. Bloody hell ...

Last I saw it pasted over the US, they would have had to mean just the US (very slightly smaller, I think, but um, definitely big enough to be going on with). Might be bigger now though, I don't know.

I'm a thousand miles away and I have the same feeling. I've been to some of the islands in its path and they are not high ... with the storm surge predicted it's deeply worrying.

Remuslives23 is on the outskirts of Yasi and she is getting battered already! I feel sorry for the poor central and north queenslanders, they can't catch a fucking break!

I know, right? M's parents live just inland from Port Douglas. I called this morning to see how they are, and his mum burst into tears. We will ring again this afternoon, but even if we can't get through, we're satisfied they're not on the coast and they have a plan of action, so it's just a case of waiting and seeing.

It's not just the fact that it's so strong, it's that it's so BIG as well.

It looks positively malevolent - I've been staring at pictures of it all day and its just getting scarier. Time for QLD to get a break. However, I also don't want VIC to cope it again - seems like it one or the other in quick succession at present. And yes - I'd vote for a carbon tax!

That storm's presence is making the news (not quite top, which remains Egypt, but in the headlines) over here. We are also getting lots of pundits muttering about global warming.

Let us hope everyone heeds the warnings and stays safe. (Aussie lady, in Cairns but originally from England, interviewed on the BBC World Service, "We've taken all precautions... filled the bath and everything else we can with water, mattresses to hide under if the roof comes off, planty of chocolate and wine."

Interviewer, "All the essentials, then."

Not all that weird -it's the la nina with extra-warm sea- surface temps in the Coral Sea that is the trigger for both weather system this time, just as it was then. Water temp was 28 celsius this week according to the lab gossip.

Weird or not, it is very scary, though!

yeah. i knew it was part of the la nina, but the extent is still startling. and yes, scary.

Oh my god, that is HUGE. If that cyclone was up here it looks like it would cover half of Europe at once. That is scary-how would you run away?? D:

I hope everyone in Queensland comes out of this OK. They've had enough difficulties this year already :(

I'm starting to think the world really is coming to and end. What the hell. Between earthquakes, floods, riots/wars, plane/bus/train crashes, and massive storm cells, I mean seriously?

Or maybe I'm just more AWARE of it the last two years than in years prior, I don't know.

from us down south where we're currently on fire alert (last few days 40+) to our mates up north - we're thinking of you!

I want to offer platitudes like 'keep calm and carry on' but at the rate the weather is carrying on at moment is calm even possible?

and to the carbon tax, HELL YES say I!

I have had people tell me that in all seriousness. I bet they weren't expecting the twenty minute lecture on sea temperatures and their effects that followed. (I am thinking of making up pamphlets ...)

MOOMIN!

I am guessing that it will take one of the following:
* An OPEC nation being swamped by either a cyclone or rising sea levels.
* The Lord God making an appearance on American television to say 'WTF, people, this is not how I left it.' (Personally, I would be shocked.)
* The Scandinavians somehow seizing control of all international organisations including the UN and World Bank and imposing Basic Practical Sense.
