Cyclone Yasi took out one of the weather stations tracking it this morning. A station that was built to withstand Category 5 cyclones. Up north they have either fled or barricaded themselves inside.

For those of you abroad, yes, that's the same state that spent most of the last two months underwater. Bloody hell.

And you Americans in the Big Snow, keep safe! Stay inside and put an extra dog on the bed!

Can we have a carbon tax now, please? It has to cost less than mopping up after so many extreme weather events.

It started at about 11pm and will be going through the night, with storm surges following in the morning. There is minimal news coming out of Queensland tonight because everyone is battened down and not going out for anything.

In trivia news, the storm cell is allegedly the size of North America -- I hope they mean the United States ... ah ... perhaps they do mean North America after all:


Just turned the news back on and Egypt is going to hell in a handbasket, too. Bloody hell ...

I know, right? M's parents live just inland from Port Douglas. I called this morning to see how they are, and his mum burst into tears. We will ring again this afternoon, but even if we can't get through, we're satisfied they're not on the coast and they have a plan of action, so it's just a case of waiting and seeing.

It's not just the fact that it's so strong, it's that it's so BIG as well.

That storm's presence is making the news (not quite top, which remains Egypt, but in the headlines) over here. We are also getting lots of pundits muttering about global warming.

Let us hope everyone heeds the warnings and stays safe. (Aussie lady, in Cairns but originally from England, interviewed on the BBC World Service, "We've taken all precautions... filled the bath and everything else we can with water, mattresses to hide under if the roof comes off, planty of chocolate and wine."

Not all that weird -it's the la nina with extra-warm sea- surface temps in the Coral Sea that is the trigger for both weather system this time, just as it was then. Water temp was 28 celsius this week according to the lab gossip.

Weird or not, it is very scary, though!

I am guessing that it will take one of the following:
* An OPEC nation being swamped by either a cyclone or rising sea levels.
* The Lord God making an appearance on American television to say 'WTF, people, this is not how I left it.' (Personally, I would be shocked.)
* The Scandinavians somehow seizing control of all international organisations including the UN and World Bank and imposing Basic Practical Sense.
