Oh good grief ...

This week remains unhelpful.

Finger is broken (though not badly, all will be well once it stops hurting), then poor young Heath, and now MY MAGAZINE HAS FOLDED!

Now, I do not grow deeply attached to titles and workplaces for the very reason that I am familiar with the vagaries of publishing, but I really enjoyed working there and it was with the smartest and most interesting team I had ever encountered. So ... BUGGER!

Will be fine, there is redundancy pay so I do not need to dip into savings, and I also have three weeks' leave even after the hols, just ... BUGGER!

At least I can now spend a few more days in New Zealand than I looked like being able to. That's good. And if the pay-out comes through quickly and some writing gigs fall into place, I can make it up to Welly for a bit and badger people for more work! And June in Paris is back on the agenda! So really, there are plenty of silver linings, I'll just miss my workmates.

Paris in June = fun! Great shopping, great food.

What on earth are you doing awake right now?

I'm crossing my fingers for you as far as the latest news is concerned.

I am fuelled by sugar and alcohol!! And about to go flubble.

The best of all possible worlds would be a redundancy cheque followed by employment at another publishing house with the same team, because I could then afford an unpaid month in June!

No sport while plague-ridden! important rule!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehhhhheheheheeh. No thanks, I try not to eat animals I give names to.

Yeah, it's just a shame. Oh well. The alcohol and painkillers are wearing off, I should go to bed ...

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That's lovely! I can see some hope and future plans in it now!

(And that was a very fine damn, BTW ;-)

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I am ignoring it and focussing on next week, which contains my birthday. There had better bloody well be cake!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed.

[identity profile] spark-of-chaos.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, it's summer over there! :wants it: I'll love any summer dress right now.

We study the bones with actual bones here, and let me tell you, no one non-medical wanted in my room while I was on bones. :g: But once during study party we did a fun re-enactment of the Hamlet-with-the-skull scene.... :cheeky:

Doctor Tracy did that, too! She also used me as her homework for her trauma injury course. She received a high distinction. I'll say in her defence that she helped me bathe after the nasty taxi incident and provided chocolate after the foot disaster, so I was more than just a guinea pig! (I actually have very strong bones, I'm just prepared to test them to and past their limits, often involuntarily)

Is stinky humid, you may have it ...

::pets:: I'm sad for you. It sucks to have to start all over again, most especially when it's unexpected. Rolling with the changes is the mature thing, sure, but it's okay to pout a little for the upsetting of the apple cart, I think.

And who knows, maybe you'll be able to work out the same deal at the new place. Or maybe they all only work four days, and you can get three days! And they have cake on Fridays, and naps every day at 3:00. You just never know till you look. ::nods wisely::

Does this happen often? I don't know why, but I thought that the one you worked for had been around for a long time.

I suppose the only ones that last are the ones that set impossible standards and make people hate themselves, or tabloids. The human race is insane.

[identity profile] spark-of-chaos.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn. The people I use as educational help are always complaining and most unwilling! I'm ready to provide more than chocolate too :g:

We have two feet of snow. :/ How about I give you half of mine, you give me half of yours and we both end up with reasonable, mild weather? :crafty:

I hope everything works out for the best!

[identity profile] bryoneybrynn.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! So shitty! And you were just telling me of the four-day-work-week splendor and the loveliness of the situation. Sucky. I hear you about people - that's always the saddest part of leaving a job (providing the $$ is okay, of course). Sounds like some awesome travelling ahead though. This June I will be travelling to um... um... my mom's house? My sister's townhouse in the burbs? The mall? *sigh*

Best of luck in what lies ahead. Somehow I doubt you will be without work for long! Also, I see the broken finger isn't slowing down your typing - that's dedication! *g*

[identity profile] snottygrrl.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
i adore the fact that losing a work position equates to june in paris for you :D

sorry about the buggery situation, unless of course it means that i get to meet you sooner in which case i'd be pleased as punch about it but not in near you, just quietly in the background [*grins*]

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I am more worried that they will offer me an alternate role in the publishing house, but there are no other weekly news mags, and the rest are mostly women's titles, which I do not work on. So the redundancy should be OK. Our union rep says that they must offer an acceptable position and one that is similar in duties and package, so fingers crossed I just run off with the cash instead. Meeting Wednesday.

And yes, popping up to Welly is very high on my agenda! We will drink tea, Ms Sno!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW! I finally found a team I really liked and pfft ... gone! BALLS!

I'm never without work for long, but some of it is less appealling than other. It's the universe telling me to finish a damn novel (and some fic)

Eight fingered typing is relatively fast, but still annoying, and occasionally painful when I forget ...

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Three days with cake and a nap room would be SO perfect ...

This mag was the oldest in Australia. It was also one of the best, but, alas, did not make a profit. There were a lot of reasons for that, but none of them really matter right now. Sigh.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! It will all be fine, it's just annoying.

[identity profile] shadowclub.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well at least there is a silver lining!

May I ask how you managed to break your finger?!

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
My partner and I were playing softball, which was fine. Then he switched to the nerf torpedo, a toy designed for small children. On fast throw to my far right, with an out-stretched hand and thwacked pinky later ...

A softball injury would at least not be embarrassing!

[identity profile] pushdragon.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually read the articles yesterday instead of the headlines. I didn't realise it was so sudden!! What about staff on one income with mortgage repayments?! And the grief process, of having no time to adjust. Is this usual in your industry? It seems very cruel. And ignominious for such a monumental publication.

And naturally I approve of the novel! Will it have slash? :-)

[identity profile] shadowclub.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, I have heard much worse stories, no worries! My friend once broke her foot while playing ping pong... it was questionable.

[identity profile] lackofmendacity.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
What, your magazine folded?! Poor sweetie... *hugs you tight*

(Ummm, I'm not sure why it is you'd be spending more time in New Zealand, but sure. *g*)

Mmm, anyway. Happy Australia Day! :)

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor magazine. 128 years all gone in an instant. Bloody bean counters.

And I have a 'do' in New Zealand next weekend, which was going to be fly-in, fly-out, but suddenly I have more time ... so there's some good.

I loved that list. Did you know it took me six months to work out that Seeyasarvo was I'll see you this afternoon ... I thought it was some Aborginal word ...

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHAHA! Sorry, I shouldn't laugh. How?
