From the local paper.

In other news, things are chaotic but will return to something resembling normal tomorrow. Possibly the day after.

Yeah this is a bit of old news here in the U.S. The pundits have been up in arms over the whole thing. There are people dying of starvation not three blocks from where these experts tape the show decrying modern American morality and they are worrying about this. I am not astonished by anything anymore. Hadn't really realized you were in Australia either I guess. I hope you are healing from your tragic loss. Me and the kitty's have been thinking and praying for you.

It looks like the Advocate site might be down right now, but they have a picture of him pregnant, which is very interesting.

He claims he's off testosterone, but I'm skeptical, judging from the photo in which he sports facial hair and a very male appearance. I'm baffled as to how he can conceive and carry a baby without letting estrogen do its thing.

Hey, if he can get pregnant, I should be able to as well! :)

Of course he has facial hair and a masculine appearance. Going off T for a few months is not going to magically make him look female again. Going off T causes a surge of estrogen (and other female hormones?) back into the system, so a guy will (probably) get his period again, thus allowing him to get pregnant, but it won't undo the changes such as facial and body hair, clit growth, deeper voice, etc.

He's also not the first transguy to get pregnant. The most well-known example is Patrick Califia's former partner, Matt Rice, who is also FtM and bore their child (article (http://www.villagevoice.com/news/0025,califia-rice,15833,1.html); wow, that was over eight years ago).

(Here via friendsfriends, btw.)

Wow, goes to show how little I know. I had no idea that a transman's appearance wouldn't revert back to female after going off T. *goes to check out Matt Rice article*

The Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hormone_replacement_therapy_%28female-to-male%29) on hormone replacement therapy for transmen is pretty thorough. (On HRT for transwomen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hormone_replacement_therapy_%28male-to-female%29) might also interest you.) Basically, it's easy to add changes with testosterone and hard to take them away. T induces many permanent changes, whether occuring naturally in male puberty or in HRT. So, for example, even giving transwomen estrogen and giving them androgen blockers will not reverse the changes they went through in puberty.

hah just wanted to go off on a research spree because I thought so, too, but had no facts to present. And thanks for the above link, too. I was searching for something like this the whole morning. (I haven't known this specific instance but I've read on transgender support sites when I was researching for a fic that FTM getting pregnant and carrying the baby to term has been known to happen.)

I take it back. Looking at the picture, I have read about this.

No problem. I had that link handy because someone else posted the same thing last week and a commenter was saying something about how many doctors didn't want to treat him because of not wanting the media attention for a breakthrough like this and I was like, dude, I know this is not the first! And then I had fun googling stuff like "Patrick Califia partner pregnancy" trying to find some info, because I couldn't remember the guy's name. XD I didn't realise it had been so long, though. (Aside: apparently ftm also stands for "first-time mother", which makes searching for "ftm pregnancy" really fruitless!)

heh I searched for 'transgender' because they usually feel the need to explain what FTM is for the general audience's benefit. :D (Still couldn't find anything else than this case, though.)

I've read the original article earlier today and then started searching for similar articles and what I found was appaling. I think most of the people writing those articles either do it on purpose for making it sound more like a scandal or have not the foggiest idea what transgender means. The titles that pissed me off most were full with quotation marks (around "man" and "pregnant") and some of them also said he "thinks" or "claims" to be pregnant. :(((

Hee, I'm quite amused by the article, but the poor guy... I don't think it's very nice how doctors refuse to treat him though. :/

I hope things have been okay with you, sweetie - keep strong and brave, okay? *hugs you tight*

All I really have to say is those doctors should be appalled by themselves to turn their backs on someone who obviously needs medical attention.
