Tragically, there was work for me to do today, so I am only catching up with the VP debate now (and given that the weather made a solid bid for 100 deg F today, I'll probably run out and grab ice-cream to see me through it).

It may just be me, but my opening thought is: Why does Sarah Palin's body language all read as though she has a massive crush on Joe Biden?

The ice-cream will probably help this all make more sense, I should go and sort that mission before I start slashing them ...

Palin keeps referring to Biden as Obiden, which must be their smush name, so secretly she slashes them

WHY DOES SHE SPEAK LIKE A CANADIAN, DEENSE?!

Or is she a cunning plant from your people in a bid to rule by stealth?

Cause she's from Alaska, which is just a microcosm of the us you know.

She was too afraid to say Hot Chicks of the NRA, Huntin' Shootin' Fishin' Monthly, The Anchorage Advertiser, and Public Speaking for Dummies.

Could she not just have said "I'm a big fan of The New Yorker" and grinned at the irony?

Or how about the Washington Post? Newsweek?

I went for the easiest name. Those two are easy to get wrong: Is it the Washington Post or Washington Times? Newsweek or Newsday? Newsfortnight! No, that's crazy talk ...

Ahahaha, News Daily Mirror! No! It's the Washington Daily Bugle! Wait, no!

I don't think you're allowed to say New York if you're from Alaska. Not without calling it a Den of Iniquity.

Heh!

Have you recovered from the heat? The cats looked at me wildly when I came home: WHAT have you done with the weather? their faces said.

I chose today to flea bomb the house, so my kitty was trapped in the courtyard half the day. He hates me.

Ooh, you are a meanie! We're hoping the few fleas we've found on the cats represent the sum total and will be wiped out by their fleaing. Alternatively, we'll be taking the two of them and their litter tray on a little holiday somewhere.

Yeah, I treated him last night and bombed the place today. Hopefully that will be the end of it. <3333

Oh, great. Thanks so much for the incentive. :P I've been trying to avoid watching the VP debate on my DVR (my parents recorded it) because... well, it just doesn't interest me at all (any election doesn't interest me at all), but now you've gone and done it: you made me want to watch this.

NB, I am still dying of heat, I could easily be hallucinating. You could hold out until I've had something cold and been able to watch more than the first few minutes.

Oh. In that case, yes, I'll wait until you've had that ice cream, or something else cold. Maybe I should get some ice cream, too... I need it to counter the idea of me watching anything political on TV. :P

I haven't seen it yet so I can't really comment. But of course I'm going to anyway. ;) I'm actively trying to avoid watching her, to be honest, she just gets up my nose. And the treatment she's getting - silk gloves because she's a mother, for example (as if Obama and McCain aren't fathers!) - is beyond infuriating. Come ON, people - if the best thing to say about a VP candidate is that she manages to avoid making a total fool of herself on occasion (oh, and that she's purdy), it's a sad state of affairs.

In other news, we have 9 degrees C and rain today. It's almost summer! ;)

SNORT! 36 degrees and blazing sun, it's early spring. I am going to be clinging to the walls of Florence and hugging them, chanting "Cool! COOL!" Just leave me there, or lure me away with gelato.

Actually, in the coverage here, Biden played the parent card far better in the debate, and he has much better reason to. It came across as sincere at that point, which is unusual. She does have great hair, though. I wish she was running for something she was qualified for, she'd be fantastic as a member of the IOC, for instance.

My money's on the chant going more like "Cold! Cold!" and that the luring will have to be done with hot chocolate. Which still works fine! I'm probably going to be exhausted by the time I get to Florence, I've just realised. Over three weeks I have a quick weekend trip to London with my parents and sister/BIL, then a weekend visit to a friend who lives in the middle of nowhere. I get back on Sunday evening only to leave for Barcelona for a week's conference eeeearly Monday morning. Then I have two days at home before Florence. Phew! So if I get stupidly drunk on the first evening I'll blame it on exhaustion. ;) I love a good excuse.

Palin scares me. I've seen clips of her speaking at her church, and the mix of politics and religion is quite frighening.

Una cioccolata calda, per favore!

I'll make sure that I have all the nouns for spirits in my head for you ;-)

Palin herself doesn't scare me, she's just a product of her culture. Palin as VP or Pres bloody terrifies me.

That's very kind of you. I'm sure all of Florence will thank you once you've exercised your drinking vocabulary enough to get me properly drunk and disorderly. :D

And yes, that's what I meant - it's the potential combo of her views, personality and a position of power that's so chilling.

Look at the girlish duck and touch at the beginning, and the way that she can't help looking up at him through her fringe when they leave the stage -- "Don't look, Sarah, he'll know you're imagining him naked ... don't look ... don't look ... DAMN! Oh wow, he was totally smiling at me!"

YES! I agree. And look, they're both attractive and mature adults who will no doubt remain true to their partners while enjoying that little frisson of excitement, and who can begrudge them that? ;-)

It's a sad state of affairs when a woman running for an office of such importance can't keep that shit under control on national TV. Honestly, does she not know the difference between a political debate and a cocktail party.

I hate her for a whole new set of reasons now. She's just really crappy PR for women in positions of responsibility.

I watched a bit at someone's urging (solely for entertainment value, I already know against whom I'm voting), and before falling asleep shortly into it I managed to be nearly mesmerized by Palin. Her body language almost seemed coquettish at times. She's certainly not my type, and prior to this week watching her made me physically ill, so I find it unsettling that she was so appealing, (while as usual managing to say nothing of substance). Maybe just a moment of insanity. *shudder*
