Chortling ...

I'm watching an episode of Foyle's War (British crime procedural set during WWII, quite good) and the following conversation just took place --

American Captain: I want someone to come out and give us a talk
Foyle: A talk on what?
American Captain: The English! None of my boys has ever been out of the States before and, frankly, for some of them they feel as if they've landed on another planet. I need someone to come out and tell us what goes on around here ... Until two weeks ago, I didn't even know what a kipper was. We need help.
Foyle: I can see that.

It's not just fandom!

Oh, and if you follow nothing else at [livejournal.com profile] azkatrazathome , do come and check out the drawbles that are appearing in the CCD threads. So very wrong ...

I hardly dare to ask but how can 'take the following left' be misunderstood by Americans?

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-07-18 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Genuine conversation: 'Well how the hell was I to know what that means? It's the next left! What would I be following? I'm following the ROAD, for God's sake. Jesus, why can't you people speak like normal people??!'

Ah, I see. Gosh, life must be hard for Americans, being the only normal people in the world. ;)

To be fair, this was an ex of mine, and he was remarkably thick. Hot to the nth degree, but, alas, he insisted on talking.

Many Americans are far superior in the thinking stakes. And, to him, many sheep ...
