It is our habit to be complete slugabeds on Boxing Day*. Which is why Mr Brammers staggered from bed and into the shower at 3pm. On coming out of the shower, with something approaching a compis mentis, he looked at the cricket on the television and asked, 'How's it going?'

'Good,' I replied. 'For me.'

He peered at the score across the bottom of the screen. His jaw dropped. 'Oh what?! Holy Mother of God!' Yep. 9 wickets had fallen for 92 runs.

In a bid to cheer themselves up, the Australian commentary team showed the score cards from the Centenary test back in 1977, where Australia also suffered a first innings batting collapse, but England suffered a worse one. Of course, I was busy laughing at Mr B through this period, so when we turned back to the telly, we were momentarily baffled as we read down the order. 'Who? What?' we said.

'Oh, it's 1977,' I said as the England card came up and I recognised names. 'I remember that era -- was there ever a more pernicious phrase in the English language than caught Marsh, bowled Lillee?'

'I'll let you know in a few days,' moped Mr B.**

* And sundry other days throughout the year when we think we can get away with it.
** A minute later Australia were dismissed for 98. The commentary team are cheering themselves up with the possibility that this is just another fabbo bowling wicket, which I would scoff at, but given how this series has been going so far ...

Cautiously happy.

My goodness. Cricket is a funny game.

I think it was Tony Greig who said there seemed to be a competition for who could stage the most comprehensive first innings collapse -- and he's right!

I was up a couple of hours before him. But yes, missed the top order :-( Still, very happy with what I saw!

I cannot blame the Aussies for taking what consolation they can. I can only hope that it is hollow.

I have no idea what they were thinking after the first few wickets fell -- it was blindingly obvious what England was doing, but there was no adaptation in the face of it. You're right, insanity.

Yes, I was watching that - wandered out to the kitchen, wandered back, saw the scoreboard and went, wait, G Chappell?!

My brother is an MCC member, and is at the game today. I took great pleasure in emailing him and asking whether this was a test match or a one-day game?

Ooh, you're mean. I like that!

I started listening to your advent music series last night -- beautiful stuff. Thank you so much for posting it!

All out for 98! Yahooooo! I gave up barracking for Australia in the cricket about 15 years ago. The lack of sportsmanship and sheer nastiness of running up 600+ innings left me feeling tarnished. And I was born in Essex, anyway!

You have a choice! And I congratulate you on making the right one ;-)

And yes, that's why I cannot bring myself to support the Australian cricket team, while I have no trouble in football.

Ponting must go

Opps - Aussies just gave the Brits 5 off a no ball! tee hee!
Normally I am an Aussie supporter, but I have no respect for Ponting and his men. I hope this ushers in the next era of Aussie cricket - a return to grace.

I'd like to see them actually go back to being gracious. I remember when the teams were friendly and courteous while still being extremely competitive on the field. There's just so much nastiness now, that Peter Siddle was vile this week. Nasty little man, I hope Cook wallops him.

One of my dearest friends emailed me just a few minutes ago from Oz, saying "are you having a good time, enjoying our collective decimation?"

Why yes, yes, I am. *g* And now I cross fingers, toes and eyes for the rest of the match...

Well, if we're allowed to kill one tenth of them, I vote for Siddle rather than Ponting, given he's such a nasty piece of work.

Your crossing appears to have worked a treat!

Tragically I can't recall, it was recently on the news and he was a smug, potato-faced little weasel who exhibited bad sportsmanship, and so deserves to look like that.

Ah, lovely.

I find the Australian attitude to a losing test match team rather puzzling. If the English went home early every time we did badly, we'd never see anything.

From: [identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com
To be fair, it was running late, and trying to fit on a tram when the crowds are coming home from a Boxing Day out at the sales and cinema can be hell ...

That and after that many hours in that sun you are dying of heat exhaustion anyway. How people can do it outside of a corporate box I'll never understand.

I find they're actually more annoyed if you can pause in endless renditions of the Hallelujah Chorus long enough to say 'Oh, of course, it's a dreadful shame for Ponting ... I do feel for you ...'

Snerfles.

~takes notes~

I do need to ring the changes with my gloating at the Australian flist.

I did find that Siddle was saying that sledging was fine and all in fun. Sooooo, we'll see how he feels about that tonight.

You realize that was entirely unintelligible to most of us in America... and SOME of us are working on Boxing Day. (It's 7am here in New York, and I'm awaiting a phone call from the night hospitalist to endorse, then I'm off to the hospital myself...)

It's true, but since Sarah Palin and Lady Gaga are both incomprehensible to me, I feel it's only turnabout and therefore fair play ;-)

And I am so sorry. Australia is even better than England when it comes to public holidays at this point, as pretty much the whole country says, 'Eh, there's really no point going back between Christmas and New Year. Stuff it, take the week off.'

I hope you have a lovely peaceful evening with no one suffering from any turkey-related incidents!
