I have a proper post, with THINGS, and then another very serious post, with important things, but I have to get this out first, or will be drummed out of the country:

GO BLACK CAVIAR!

Having grown up around various corners of the horse industry, I'm always a bit ambivalent about racing, but she is a beautiful and much-loved mare who really loves to run. And is AMAZING.

Of course, being a horse, she may take one look at Royal Ascot and decide 'Nah, buggrit …' They're like much bigger, somewhat dimmer cats that way.

We are very excited about Black Caviar here too. The week is being bookended by the two best flat racehorses in the world at the moment. The start was Frankel, undoubtedly the best miler in the world and the highest rated racehorse since the days of Sea Bird II and Brigadier Gerard.

Black Caviar seems to have travelled and worked well. Looking forward to this afternoon.

I've never even heard of her. What a beauty.

She's so pretty! And apparently a very sweet horse, they call her Nelly as her stable name. Clearly also a total camerahog ;-)

Whew!

Ascot is a stiff six furlongs, much of it uphill, and her jockey didn't help, but the record stands intact - just.

Whew indeed! I was listening on the radio and holding my breath. I did like the fact that the jockey took all the blame onto himself, though in Nolen's defence, the track was new to him, too, and she does normally coast home without slowing. It was a big relief, though.

Frankel is amazing, too. And another horse that just loves to run. What a wonderful season you are having!

It's a stiff six furlongs at Royal Ascot on the straight course with the last few furlongs uphill, and the filly coming up behind her at the end is actually a seven furling specialist. Also, Black Caviar appears to have torn muscles during the race, which can't have helped, poor lass. She was so brave to respond at the end. However, the going can't be blamed, for it was actually good on the straight course, though good to soft on the round.

She is an astonishing-looking mare, almost top-heavy on shoulders, and she must have the most incredible bone. Her racing weight is more than one of the top UK chasers, Denman, who is a hand taller at 17.2 and was known as 'the tank' - so you can tell how he was built!

I know! She's unusually dense, in all the best ways ;-) I feel a personal connection as at my fittest, I tend to weigh about 60kg, which always makes my doctor look at me weirdly since I'm little, but solid!

She is a determined girl! I hope they don't retire her now, but if they do, at least I know the connections have the equivalent of Sean Connery's place in the Bahamas planned for her -- with probably about the same amount of sex …

She did beautifully! YAY Black Caviar, long may she continue to love to run :)

Yay indeed! I do hope they don't retire her yet, but I also hope she has a nice little break to recover. There are places in England that are essentially horse spas, I do hope she's been put up at one of those ;-)
