But I've turned on the telly to catch up on some recorded docos and noticed that one of the channels here in Sydney is playing Deep Impact during the hours we were allegedly going to meet our doom. Well played, commercial TV, well played!

In good news, it may be the case that I will not hate Elementary, just the adverts, which from the sounds of my flist feedback are nothing like the actual show. Even though it's apparently best looked at as not-Holmes, but a good crime show with people whose parents thought it would be hilarious to name them after Holmes and Watson. I should emphasise that it's not the American location I have any objections to: I liked the American Office more than the British one (probably because I have a Ricky Gervais allergy) and I even liked the US Life on Mars, once I stopped thinking of it as Life on Mars: it had lots of good points in and of itself once you stopped comparing it, even if the ending was terribly silly.

And of all the writers who are very open to Americanisation, Conan Doyle would have popped himself up the top of the list. Like Dickens he was hugely aware of the importance of the US market and frequently had American crimes popping up. But I don't understand why they've not made Sherlock American. Surely there are hot American actors who can play slightly sociopathic geniuses who aren't Robert Downey Junior?

I have NOTHING that I have to write for the rest of the year! Between work and fandom and my own work, I have kicked over 180,000 words in the last three-and-a-bit months. My hands are tired! Should probably kick on with the original stuff, or raitala and pingrid will Have Words (such as 'you giant slacker' and 'I thought you were planning to fund your next trip this way').

Look, I'd say something eyerolly here, but I would be a GIANT hypocrite if I did, because the truth of the matter is that on any number of occasions in my younger days I used my own accent to land hot American boys (whose greatest virtue was meant to be that they would then Go Away. That part didn't always work out, American boys can be very sappy romantic types!)

I could be really philosophical about just why Americans seem to be so fond of a nice accent, but it'd take far too long. The simple explanation is that we, by and large, love a good understandable accent. Perhaps it adds an air of mystery? Perhaps it's one of those things that just IS.
