Useful* word count before beginning: 11, 781
After a quick midnight type and before an evening's work: 12,197 (and about 200 more that were deleted and rewritten)

Complicating factors for the evening's work: evil bicycle toe strap caught my foot on my pedal when I was putting my foot down coming to a stop at a roundabout and I came off. I currently possess the mother of all elbow bruises! But I did keep everything tucked in neatly so it's minimal damage. Save to my ego.

On the upside, three fellow cyclists and some nice workers from the building site on the corner all leapt to help. No need for help, mostly just embarrassed! Off to he bike shop tomorrow for new toe straps, or maybe some clips. Or maybe I should just bite the bullet and go back to cleats and keep a pair of comfy shoes at work … Mildly tempted to buy some mountain biking body armour for my right elbow, which has been taking the brunt of things this year. I had even told myself on the ride in that it was time to replace that toe strap, due to developing evil. One day I will learn to listen to myself in a timely fashion!

* Consecutive stuff, not counting sketched out bits and fragments of later scenes that may or may not survive to the end.

I approve of the word count. I do not approve of another cycling injury. With your track record, have you considered full body armour? I hope the elbow eases up soon. X

I actually have a substantial amount of cycling body armour from my old mountain biking days, but it is all extra small and I no longer am. Might be worth a couple more months without pies to get back into it, though!

It's not too bad: stonking bruise, mild muscle strain from my failed heroic measures to return the bike to vertical :-) A bath will sort the latter.

About to launch into another writing bout after an ep of QI and a spot of dinner. Fear of mocking is my main impetus.

So are you writing an original story or fanfiction? It's nice that you're starting with something already written. I'm starting from scratch, and I'm a bit terrified. :)

Original work. And yeah: I had thought about starting something fresh, but I had this story that has a lot of the planning and research already done, so it seemed to make a lot of sense to get somewhere serious with it.

YOU CAN DO IT! Even if it's not perfect, you can edit it later and then it will be!

That definitely makes sense. My decision to do this was very last minute, so I haven't planned much of this story out yet. I'm just taking it slow, writing a page at a time.

That's what I figured! I'm just going to get it all out and then go back. I mean, it can't get much worse than it is right now. :)

A page at a time is a win, regardless of whether or not you hit an arbitrary deadline: think of all the pages!

So true! And all the words! I'm aiming for five pages today. *fingers crossed*

I think if you have an ability to sense developing evil, you are either in the wrong profession, or could at least start a side business :)

I think knee and elbow pads might be in order for you.

I can only sense developing evil in bike parts: this toe strap has been turning to the dark side for some time and I am afraid my rear cog set is also turning its back on goodness: the combination got me – right foot would not come loose, when I moved my left foot round to put the bike in a better position the chain did not engage and down I went :-(

Still, much better fall than the last one! Practise!

(I think elbow pads might not be a ridiculous idea given recent events. My poor right elbow has strata of scars …)

Cleats are the best, even when commuting. I don't like toe straps nearly as much. I tend to wiggle a lot, so I need to be completely locked in!

Hope your elbow feels better soon! :)

Yeah, I do love cleats on my road bike and adored them back when I used to mountain bike: I just like being able to turn up to work in the same shoes I will be wearing through the day. Though I suppose since I already have a pair of platform boots under my desk so that I can reach the top row on the proof board, I may as well just add another pair of work shoes and have done with it …

I don't mind clips or straps, but when straps go evil, they really go evil! I should have listened to myself instead of pretending it would all be fine.

It is going to feel much, much worse tomorrow and then be fine: I can already feel the muscles that all tried to stop things going pear shaped saying 'You would not believe the lactic acid!' Still, it's a 24-hour ache. Unlike the bruises to my pride!

Yay words!
You should start riding a cargo bike. It's slow, but you'll likely never have a fall again and you'll be able to transport an insane amount of useless things.

If I had a bigger house and shed, I would absolutely own a Christiana bike! As it is, I have a lovely Velorbis, but she is a bit too big for me, so she doesn't get ridden as often as she might: plus she weighs more than twice as much as my trusty old Mongoose, even with its rack and mudguards. I can't count the panniers, because they always end up chockers no matter which bike I am on! So you are very right that I would have no trouble filling up a cargo box! (I could borrow dogs and children! Or start a mobile library!)

The possibilities are endless! I like the idea of a mobile library.
I loved my nihola when I lived in the city. It's 7 kilo lighter than the christiania bike and that really makes a difference when it's loaded up with a child + groceries for a week!

I'm thinking we should just wrap you in a giant ball of padding and roll you to wherever you want to go. We will make sure your ball has adequate reflectors for extra safety (possible for others). :D

Feel better soon, goose. I don't like how you keep boo boo-ing yourself.
