Happy Birthday,
drgaellon, you kind and generous human, you!
Eaten by work, back in a bit.
Oh, and if you are a pedestrian who steps out blindly from between two parked cars in front of a cyclist on a downhill stretch and then dithers about which direction you will be getting out of the way in after the cyclist shouts an alert, before deciding to dash across anyway, a. do not shout abuse at the cyclist who has performed heroic measures to avoid hitting you and only managed it by dint of spectacular braking – you in no way had time and b. you're an IDIOT. Lucky for him the rains had held off, there's no way I would have made it on a wet road. AND he was a whole 15m from a crossing with clear views for both him and me.
Remember, you generally can't hear bicycles, you need to look. We look out for you, but we can't see through other objects, like SUVs. With my full panniers, bike and body, I'm getting close to 100kg of mass and at 40km/h, that is a lot of force to try to stop and even worse to wear!

Date: 2013-12-10 11:28 am (UTC)But yeah, cyclist-pedestrian crashes are mostly caused by some pedestrians not having the road sense of a ferret and those tend to be the worst ones (the ones where cyclists are at fault are mostly couriers and other idiot cyclists (we're not all pure!) screaming through red lights across pedestrian greens, or ignoring crossings, or, and better, muppets on the pavement, happily those ones tend to be low-speed and minimal-injury.) And I don't mind him having the road sense of a ferret, because some people will always be idiots, but to then roundly abuse me for his cock-up was infuriating!
I think I will ask for a GoPro camera for Christmas and start blogging the muppetry – will need a cycling blog to fail at, too …
