Someone on my flist recently posted that their LJ had gone completely rogue and was displaying in a wholly unexpected and unhelpful way. They then fixed it, through persistance and brilliance.

It would have been awesome if I could have remembered who, alas, MY BRAIN IS NOT YET BACK since last Friday, it is instead off in wibbly wobbly land, able to concentrate on very little.

If it was you, and you wouldn't mind sharing your brilliance, could you please drop [livejournal.com profile] mific a line?

In tooth news, I still look and feel as though I have been kicked in the face by a goat but at least was up to doing the laundry today. Now if only I was up to calculus!

And in other fanfic news, some teacher who did not think things through has set students a project to go and leave critical reviews on fanfics without giving the writers a say, a heads-up or even a box of chocolates. Read about it here. Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] inamac, for raising the topic, and the fab insight you had into it.

In real-world news, the Australian government has spent the week trying to discredit the head of our Human Rights Commission because she has had the audacity to call for human rights for refugees. Treating refugees as though they're humans, what do we think we are? Italians?!

(PS Should any members of the Italian government who have done such a sterling job in rescuing and caring for refugees care to say something damning about the Australian government, you will have a lot of support here.)

LJ has a bad habit of forcing people into their grisly 'newstyle' then making it incredibly difficult to revert.

I've not been forced out of 'oldstyle' (yet- this may be an artefact of running a Chrome based system) but I know people who have.

I'm like you, by dint of relentlessly not updating ;-) This was something even weirder, though no doubt caused by random LJ ;-)

Thank you! I think it might be time for another chorus of 'If I only Had A Brain' at this end, glad you have a grand one!

I really wonder what was the teachers' aim, telling their students to give critical reviews. And I looked at the the list of fics : some of them are not something I would feel comfortable assigning as a reading requirement. And I'm sure nobody knew all the differents canons either.

The 'teachers' were students themselves, and identify as fanfic fans. One of them has(or had, because that may have changed since yesterday)fic up on AO3.

They chose the stories because they were their own favourites.

Unfortunately for them, their identities are now known to fandom. I rather think they are learning about unsought criticism the hard way.

Unfortunately for them, their identities are now known to fandom. I rather think they are learning about unsought criticism the hard way. Fandom is not known for its calm or rationnality. We have a saying in French for those situations : "a tempest in a water glass"...

Didn't those students-teacher have a faculty advisor? That would have made everthing easier for everyone involved.

They chose the stories because they were their own favourites. : part of the problem in my opinion. You need distance when you teach. Let me tell you, when I introduce Oedipus and his story/myth in a classroom setting, I pick my words with care, and I give a lot of thought about the assignements.

Edited because of a typo.

Not only did they have an advisor/supervisor (whose name is also known to fandom and has, I suspect, received rather more emails than he can cope with) but in the US there are ethical guidelines for interaction with people outside the university.

This, according to American academics in fandom, is against those codes.

Over twenty years ago, when Henry Jenkins was writing Textual Poachers - the first, I think, published academic study of fan fiction, I was one of the people whose fic he wanted to quote from. I refused, because at that time I was working for Customs and Excise, who were seizing slash fanzines on import to the UK. Henry accepted that at once, but then Henry is a respected academic and a fan.

I know mad-martha had trouble with her journal and fixed it.
Ugh. Wisdom tooth removal. Was it in the chair or did they have to put you out?
I wont tell you my horror stories.
Ugh. Australian government. I can't even...

I just finished reading Foxglove Summer. Really enjoyed it.
