The thing I find so dull about British characters on American TV is that if the character is wonderful and jolly and much loved they invariably sound like they are from Liverpool or from within St.Mary-le-Bow's precincts. But if they are sinister and haughty they have the whole posh Oxbridge RP accent going. Drives me bonkers. It's as if anyone from Cheapside couldm't be anything but a fun-loving moron.
