J and I have a new fitness regime, we go down to the park and play like 10-year-olds. NB, like, not with, because that is wrong.

Our favourite game is throwing things at each others heads, which is much better done as organised sport than as a domestic. We have a softball, with mitts, and a Nerf torpedo. That Nerf is much harsher than you might think, especially when thrown fast and wide.

(J refuses to aim for me, thus making catching harder and more likely to cause injury. He says he doesn't want to hurt me; I point out that my closely grouped shots all come in at his face or chest, he says 'yes but I catch better than you do', I take deep breaths and do not scream 'No, I throw more accurately and make it a piece of piss for you, now do the same so I don't need to extend with my fingers!')

As a result, I may or may not have broken my fifth right metatarsal ETA metacarpal, pain makes me stupid! Though it turned out to be the base of a phalange; I'll see if it's this sore in the morning (not sitting for hours in casualty if it could turn out to be OK!) There's no obvious deformity and the bloodflow is fine, so even if it is broken, the delay won't hurt. But I won't be finishing up the beta-ing I was going to tonight; I'm going to sleep instead!

In far more serious bad news:
They buried Sir Edmund Hillary today. The cliche that the world is a poorer place is, in this case, undeniably and obviously true.

In happy news, I received THREE cards from America! AM and Jadzia, your Christmas cards arrived at last! And J, the birthday card you sent five days ago came in the same post. Oh Australia Post, you are so erratic ... Thank you so much, it has brought out the great happy, despite the ouch.

Wow... last year I sent a package to Australia and it arrived in ten days! I wonder if your letters were all sitting somewhere in a stack and someone finally got around to flying them over.

And ouch, you poor thing. I'm hoping your finger isn't actually broken. Going to work now... back online within the hour.

Actually, our local post office is run by reprobates, so I suspect they were waiting until there was enough to make it worth their while to wander 70m down the road ...

I am ignoring my hand until it behaves itself. We are not on good terms.

Well that rules out any wanking then.

:D

A pity. Can't think of many more satisfying activities to undertake whilst alone.

I have no idea what a Nerf torpedo is. I can't see the word 'torpedo' anywhere without thinking of a suppository, for some weird reason.

Ew ... no, not a suppository, its this: http://www.firebox.com/product/796

And our mistake was throwing it over too short a distance. And J not aiming at me.

Left hand still works ... it's reasonably dexterous if things come to that. Also, J owes me!

Oooooh, I see. Yes, I've seen those before. Do you have a dog so that you can both 'pretend' to be throwing it for the dog, or are Aussies generally not bothered about playing with kids toys?!!

:DDD

Hahah, we're generally not bothered with people when people play with frisbees, footballs or other children's toys, as long as they don't hit poor randoms. *g*

Though if you are feeling a bit childish, you could always grab a nearby 10 year old kid and invite them to play... so yay for playing with children! ;D

J and I have actually both decided that we will play as though we have invisible children and dogs. When I finally move home (with him in tow), we will spread this throughout the UK and then Europe and we will usher in a new age of peace, fitness, and embarrassment.

Other people's dogs do regularly stop by to help us out, though. It's a good way to meet canines!

I think 'meeting' dogs might be illegal in the UK.

Oh yay! I sent it early, because Australia is half the planet away from here and the ponies seem to have trouble with large bodies of water...

Poor Brammers--I've broken a finger or two myself over the years. It's not fun, but it's probably fine that you didn't go have it looked at. There really isn't much they can do, and if it's not noticeably deformed, you're likely all right on your own. (Though this advice comes from someone who pays through the nose for medical attention; you might feel differently having a much more sensible plan for such things.)

And because it was you speaking of calamity and wildly thrown balls (that is not euphemistic!), it made me think of your challenge with taxi cabs. My sister (I have three, all younger) swears that she has a ball magnet in her head--any sporting situation requiring a ball will see the thing hit her in the head or face at least once, without exception.

Her daughters do not play sports.

Feel better!

Ze doctor she says: "You have broken it. Do you wish to pay $60 for an X-ray to confirm it?"
"Is there any point."
"No."
"No, then! Cheers, have $40."
"Thank you, do not do anything that hurts for a fortnight or so, and no lifting things with your pinky for a month."
[Looks]
"You'd be surprised how many people forget that."
"Sure!"

We are going back to softball tomorrow (I can throw underarm with three fingers, and catch with my mitt!) I did once break my arm at softball, but it was because I was running backwards in the outfield trying to make a catch and no one had told me about the new drainage ditch that had been dug (they alleged they did not know either).

That sounds like a fun fitness regime!

I cannot recommend it highly enough. And you stick to it, because it's fun!

Aw, poor finger. :(

Sir Edmund seemed like a genuinely lovely man. What an amazing life.

Ashamed to report that I saw the headline yesterday: "New Zealand Bids Farewell to Hillary" and for 5.2 seconds I thought "What the hell is she doing over there?" :P

I blame the modern media ;-)

At least Sir Ed had a very rich and full life, and even made beauty out of his tragedies, dedicating schools and hospitals to the names of his wife and daughter after they were killed in a plane crash.

Am ignoring the finger until it behaves. At least it's not one I need for rude hand gestures!

Always a sound strategy.

Glad the finger's not cramping your style.

Oh, I do hope your hand is okay. :/ And for future Nerf games, a thump in the chest isn't likely to cause too much damage (feel free to correct me here, I've never actually been hit by one *g*), but to me, it seems like wider throws could result in fingers/wrists being randomly twisted (as you have experienced).

YES! You are completely right. Now I just need to convince J.

Ouch :/ If it is not swollen, not bruised and you can flex your fifth finger without howling I'd say you've still got your fifth metatarsal bone whole and merely unhappy.

Go sleep! I've been lazing all day yesterday post-exam, and writing is overrated anyway (don't believe that, lol, I was a little horrified to have typed it.)

A pity I didn't chase down your address to send you a card too - I remember you left me a comment just in the middle of Dec, and I thought upon receiving if I should ask it of you, and then decided a card would arrive far too late already. This year you'll get one! :g: (if you want to, of course)

Heh! Thank you for humouring my errors. My big problem is that I have a massive pain threshold (being a bear of little brain). So when I shattered my right navicular years ago and the hospital failed to notice that one bone was in eight pieces, I hopped around with a bandage for a week thinking "there is no way that's a fucking sprain ..." Of course, an 11-year-old friend of mine was having her brain tumour removed that week, so I was busy on hospital visits and mother and sibling cheering, and I still say that was more important. It never rains ...

I now have LOTS of writing time for the next few weeks ... yeah, that rain thing ...
