In non-music news, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to two of the loveliest and most talented people about. Dearest [livejournal.com profile] dysonrules  and [livejournal.com profile] lilithium , you're both so brilliant at telling stories in your different media, and such lovely, kind people as well. I hope you have absolutely spectacular days.

Odd question: does anyone know how detonators and explosives actually work? I have a scene which could do with a tiny bit of expertise. You can email me if you want to keep quiet about your misspent youth or secret life as a sapper. Me at gmail works best. I do worry a little about what the government agencies who scan internet traffic think of me, given how regularly I can be found Googling both explosives and the correct spellings of politicians' names.

Finally, in sad but also good news, [livejournal.com profile] raitala 's life is going brilliantly, which means that she has run out of time to fit fandom in. She is having a wonderful going away party with a drabbleathon starting on Draco's birthday, and in the interim, she is giving some of her artworks away. Do check out her post here if you love her work as much as I do!

BOOOOOOOOMM!!!!!

Try this article about the science of explosives; it's a pretty nice one but not very... instructional :) (don't have your gmail address...).

I wish I have a misspent youth; would have done better in my potions lab :D.

Ooh, that's terrific on explosives, now I just need someone who knows about detonators. I have one of those cut the wire scenarios that I am trying to make minimally ridiculous. Why I go to this level of effort for any engineers and demolition experts who should happen to read my fic, I will never know: very few people do the same for me when it comes to textiles :-(

But THANK YOU! :-)

Sorry, I don't really know what you mean by work and guessed that you're trying to describe the waves :).

There is a proceeding article here—it's Australian and referring to Quarry mines, so nothing questionable:
http://proceedings.com.au/quarrying2007/papers/paper_miller.pdf

That shows you the diagram of three types of detonators and potentially, where the wire can be cut :D.(yes, I'm looking this up because I wonder too! I know there has to be an initiator of sorts...)

You never know who may read your fic! There are definitely engineers among them, not to say readers with misspent youth :).

It sounds like you've got the information you need, but if you don't, one of my cousins works in Alaska on the road crew as the person who blasts the rocks when they are making tunnels or road cuts--I could give you his e-mail or skype info if you want it.

In other news, this post by a friend of mine made me think of you...

Laughing, our chemistry teacher regularly explodes things in class! And then explains why it happened, so we're learning.

Though, it looks like you already got the info you needed :D

I wasn't even following here and I feel all sad and depressed, of course because here, too, "everyone" has been drifting away for the last year, even if different fandom. I'm dying to know (in the nearly biblical sense) how a life looks like where even ones own creations can be given away for good and all ties severed - though I assume the real friends will be staid in touch with, somehow, and if interest in source is gone, then pleasure in pictures about it leaves as well.
