It was ...

… a very good last day. There was sun, salmon, some compost guarding, and some me guarding as she checked the laptop posed no threat.

And, at the end, with all of us kneeling around her cushions in the garden, she tried to bite the vet despite being sedated to the eyeballs. Because near-death does not mean a Min cat should give up the fight. The vet was incredibly charmed by this, and described it as extremely Minlike. The vet nurse cheered Min on, which I suspect was a trifle treacherous.

It is clear to me now that I cannot die before J, because, like the good, strong, tough man he is, he is bawling.

Min to the end, and a better, more dignified end few of us could hope for. Smooshies to you and J, dear. *cries a little for the ones who are gone*

Dignified, homicidal, I don't want to split hairs on that one ...

We are up to 138 pages back on I Can Has Cheezeburger. That's not obsessive, is it?

We were hoping for a few more days, too. But her nights were becoming laboured and the days were becoming shorter, so hen she started to not be able to hold her food, it was time. But we miss her.

She went with dignity. And as painful as your loss is right now, this thought might offer some comfort.

Yeah, we know we did the right thing. Though she went more with bad temper and outrage that she was being held down in the face of vet people ... Hey grumpiness was always one of her most endearing features.

Thanks, Sno. We're still pretty teary. Not having her in the front garden or on her outdoor futon was so wrong. But she did not suffer and she went on a good day, and that's not so bad.

We're taking care of each other. And of course I am now wondering if it could all have been prevented if only I had studied veterinary oncology all those years ago. I keep not seeing her, it's very weird and sad.

My condolences. My family recently lost our cat of 10 years (kidney failure) and as allergic as I am to cats, thus, my affection for her is more of a long-distance petting, it still hurts. But heck yeah, Min went with style and that says what a charismatic and colourful personality she had. My best wishes to you and J.

I am allergic to cheese, which I think is of similar bigness to being allergic to cats. I know I am missing out on something really cool.

We've spent all day telling Min tales, from the drop bear impersonations through to her luggage fetish ("Did you pack that bag yourself, madam?" "Yes. Unless it contains a dead rat. Then the cat helped.")

I am a bit teary at the fact my flist is so lovely and tolerant of my mad cat ladydom. J has madder cat mandom, I may need to knit him a bobbly hat ...

Thanks, Ciel. The kindness of flist is a very regenerating thing. I could hear J quietly crying in his study earlier tonight, he was reading through the Min entries and all the comments. It seems to have been somewhat cathartic for him.

More with grump and umbrage -- what do you people think you are doing giving me an injection when I want to be sitting on the compost, you bastards! was the general theme -- but yes, much better than suffering and choking. How are you at hiding in towel drawers so that only your ears are visible?

Thank you for your kindness. She was a strangely big part of our lives. I've not had the heart to break it to some of the neighbours yet; maybe a little notice on the fence will be an easier thing for everyone who used to have a chat with her. Trust us to have a cat who required a social secretary.

Times like these, I really hate that there's nearly an entire world between us. Please give J a big hug from me (and I'm good at big hugs so make it a good one), then make him do the same for you.

For our part, on this side of the world, P and I will raise a glass (or two) tonight in honor of Min, a queen amongst cats (and probably people too).
