Intellectually, I am all over the Republican side of things, but when it boils down to it, most politicians end up being twats or numpties, and despite the many shortcomings of the Monarchy, they really do cavalry tremendously well! I find I have confidence in a head of government backed up by swords on horseback.

That was a very satisfying wedding. Everyone looked terrific, or terrifically silly (which is just as good), the bride was the prettiest, no one else was dressed exactly like the Queen, and all the readings and lessons were generous and appropriate.

And I bet Harry volunteered to be in the kids' coach so he could encourage vigorous waving and giggling.

Yes! There was another one who has having a couple of helmet issues, but dealt with them through a combination of lowering his head and jutting out his jaw. Slightly Neanderthal, but effective!

Oh, I hope not, it would be in terrible disgrace after two days of naughtiness! They all had a beautiful long stride, especially those two flanking William and Catherine.

They did, and I really liked it! It's hard to be different at a wedding without being weird or naff, but I thought the trees managed it with elegance and a nice natural note that seemed to fit in with William and his father.

I think maybe I just don't get the Royal Wedding thing. (Which isn't a comment on monarchy, most weddings are boring.) But by all accounts Harry is freaking adorable. What the hell? And I also find I have confidence in people backed up by swords on horseback.

I think that you need a certain set of experiences to have the right mix of fondness and comedy, with a slight edge of the absurd, for a royal wedding.

And yeah, Harry -- hot, nice with kids, has muscles, likes animals. Was a bit of a numpty in his youth, seems to be well over it.

Swords + horses = instinctive trust in most civilisations ;-)

He had more footsoldiers than Charles, who had more cavalry than Cromwell. Sadly for Charles, Cromwell also ended up with more guns.

You are of course quite right, as she is in the UK, which is where my originally English head was at time of writing. Alas, my head is also full of snot, Pimm's, Prince Harry and hot chocolate, so it is certainly not at its shiny best!

Just as well I have no horses in this country, and the swords are all up on the top shelf where I cannot reach them!

Lovely wedding. Absolutely wonderful dress (the veil was <3). The address of the Bishop of London was one of the best wedding speeches I've heard. The best, I reckon. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge look very satisfied and obviously fit each other very well. Awesome through and through, this wedding thing.

It was a very good address, wasn't it? I thought that it very beautifully respected the relationship they had already built while setting the stage for the next part of it, which I hope will be long and happy. Young people in love need hope! And yes, I agree that they fit nicely together. Always very nice to see happy couples taking the plunge.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. Loved the dress, the bride was stunningly gorgeous, Abbey looked great with the trees in, Harry and Wills SO adorable together I almost DIED (apparently a lipreader was commenting earlier online and said Harry kept asking Wills if he was okay - AWWWW), loved the kiss, Kate beaming in the carriage and on the balconey, and everyone in their finery. Fantastic hats (except the one reindeer one - Eugenie or Beatrice? I get them mixed up). I was very glad to be in London for all the festivities and enjoying the still-partying atmosphere here today!

Oh BLESS! And yes, they all looked lovely. I do like a good bit of pomp and circumstance! I wasn't keen on either Eugenie or Beatrice's hats or outfits -- both were fine in and of themselves, but belonged on fifty-year-olds, not pretty young girls.

A closet monarchist masqued as republican! Am delighted I found you over at lil_shepherds where I am already being too loud and now I´d like to friend you, if you don´t mind too awfully. If you do, no need to feel obliged to explain, no answer is as good as any in that and many a case. This, I say to myself daily but it often doesn´t work.

I really miss monarchy here in France, it´s so boring without just because of that head razor they prefer unless you can prove having done the deed in a blood rush out of sheer passion, because passion is pardoned. As is cannibalism in that Paris church. Oh, drifting. This is the kind of thing you get if you friend me back! Just saying and thanks for letting me.

You sound like enormous fun! Off to friend! And yes, I waver on Republicanism and Constitutional Monarchy -- intellectually, I am slightly in favour of the former, though I can also give a good case for the latter, but as shiv5468 has said, royals are better than pollies for launching ships and for visiting hospitals.
