That'll do, pig, that'll do ...

HAPPY HOGMANAY!
I'm not going to miss 2011. It started with hideous floods and cyclones, went on to ever-worsening earthquakes, and then continued to just wallow in regular crapiness for people I care about. When I received an email this morning from a friend telling me she had left her husband, I read it as the year signing off, and her instinctively knowing that 2012 had to be an improvement, so she'd better do the groundwork to be ready for it.
There was good news, too, HELLO to all the flist babies and KEEP GESTATING PLEASANTLY to those on the way. A few of you found love and success this year, HURRAH! Others managed amazing things, including all of those who did such a wonderful job of fundraising for disaster relief. Most of us plodded through as best we could.
Personally, it was a year of consistent niggling annoyances, with few compensatory rewards. So I made my own rewards instead! I end the year much fitter than I began it, able to play the ukulele, and with significantly improved drawing skills after taking a really rather good class. I've also survived a few months of riding a bicycle in Sydney, with cars even giving way to me rather than attempting to kill me – what brave new world that has such wonders in it! If 2012 turns out to be sneakily evil, I foresee a travelling busking operation ...
Fandom-wise, I finished Fathers, and that was it. If I began the year two years behind, I think I have ended it four years behind. But a rousing round of applause for all the fest mods, this was easily the year of least complaining about fests since I've been around, so you must be doing All the Right Things!
Politics-wise, it's best just to pretend the whole year never happened, and as for from a media perspective, I can't even go there without simultaneous rage and despair.
Instead, I will try to get one more ride in this year before the traffic gets a bit wacky, then head off to neighbourhood New Years.
I wish you all a healthy, prosperous, happy and satisfying 2012! Here's to it being better than 2011, and in some cases being much, much better!

Date: 2012-01-01 01:31 pm (UTC)I have a card for you, BTW. Will post it as soon as I work out what the hell I have done with your address! And I love the Canberra plan! Just waiting to see what life is going to throw at me this year before we talk dates.

Date: 2011-12-31 03:23 pm (UTC)Incidentally and completely randomly, your fic "Snatched" has been rattling around in my brain lately. Albus is such a strong, capable and fully-realized character, and the setting and little original magical details are so captivating that it's one of those stories that resurfaces in my head at odd times and keeps nagging at me until I read it again, which I am about to do. I just thought I'd thank you again for it and hope it encourages you not to feel too down about goals you may or may not have met this year! Cheers!

Date: 2012-01-01 02:07 pm (UTC)And thank you so much! I have been feeling sad about not writing enough fiction in 2011 -- FAR too much work writing, which was no fun at all. I'm so pleased that you enjoy Snatched, I'd never tried to write anything like that before and had so much fun trying to make the plot and pace work!
