Was reading Ring for Jeeves the other day and burst out laughing. Colonel Aubrey Wyvern's third-rate domestic staff are named Trelawny and Bulstrode.

Also, Happy Birthday [personal profile] raitala! And happy birthday for tomorrow, [personal profile] draykonis.

In sad news, Min cat is now out of chances and is living out her last weeks with all the salmon she can fit in.  The lovely vet assistant from the uber vet dropped round her pain meds this evening. She doesn't need them tonight, but it's good to have them. Poor brave kitty.

It's both better and worse. Because the tumour is through her windpipe, she'd suffocate to death. There should be about three days' warning of it getting to the point where she has to struggle for every breath, so we will go straight across to the vets and have her bopped on the head. I am going to talk to them tomorrow and see if I can just throw money at them to come here and bop her in her garden or on her spare bed. And then my little black heart will break and I will be very very sad, but at least J and I will be able to know she had a lovely time and didn't suffer.

better and worse than that.

Can't type coherently. God save my worldcup betas, because nothing will save the Governor General.

I think that's the thing. I know some people can't bear the thought of having animals put down, but you wouldn't wish anyone or anything you love to suffer unnecessarily. I think it would be the right decision. It would only break everyone's heart otherwise.

Exactly. When my mum's dad died, I was the only family aside from his useless (and evil) wife who could be there at his deathbed. I smuggled good whisky into the hospital and we made jokes. She came in and wailed. Then my fabulous second cousin appeared and was magnificent, so granddad and I could say goodbye. He asked me to smother him, I pointed out that I would if I could, but that gaol was not nice. Then I fed him more alcohol and maxxed out his morphine, and told him he should stop fighting now. To say that I felt fairly useless is pretty much the same as saying I am not that tall.

At least I can see the cat off without her fighting for breath. And with the BIGGEST bellyful of salmon (she had half of my sauteed fillet tonight).

It's interesting, isn't it? Min's been from pillar to post, possibly under her own steam, but she's been happiest of all with you, and it must be an enormous comfort to her to know she's somewhere that peope love her. There are a lot of people who don't have that.

She has been sitting on our feet. Which, in Min, means either "Mine" or "Do you have any food you are not using?"

Yes, I do feel guilty for expending all of this emotional energy on a cat and not a foundling, but if a foundling had appeared in my garden and adopted me, I like to think I would have treated him or her at least as well!

I for one don't doubt it at all.

Though I might well have been tempted to improve the facilities in the laundry just for when we needed a quick weekend away ... It's better than wandering the streets!
